BPS PE Teachers Learn New Bike/Ped Safety Curriculum, Take it to the Streets
Yesterday, the TPO and John Egberts from the   Safe Routes to School Florida Network   hosted a teacher training for  Brevard Public Schools (official)   15+ PE teachers and community partners on the new bicycle/pedestrian safety education curriculum.

Since children are not born with the knowledge and skills needed to interact with traffic while walking and biking, it is essential to teach them the rules of the road, how to navigate streets and intersections, and how to be safer while walking and biking.  Training children how to be more competent and safer pedestrians and bicyclists gives them lifelong skills that allow them to make safer and healthy transportation choices, but also lays the foundation for traffic safety skills they’ll use throughout their lives

The teachers took it to the streets to experience what their students will learn through the program.

Reduced Fare Transit Riders To Receive New IDs
Space Coast Area Transit is in the process of updating their fare structure. In order to verify current eligibility, anyone who is currently riding the bus at a reduced fare will need to receive a new ID. Staff at both the Cocoa and Melbourne transit terminals will be available Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, to assist customers who need to be issued a new reduced fare ID.

In addition, required documents can be uploaded on 321Transit.com . After verification, a reduced fare ID will be issued by mail. “Although verifying current eligibility for our reduced fare riders is a necessary process, we want to ensure that none of our valued customers are inconvenienced,” stated Scott Nelson, Interim Director of Space Coast Area Transit.

Those eligible for reduced bus fare include seniors 60+, disabled citizens, veterans, and students. To qualify for a reduced fare ID, riders may bring in one of the following: a driver’s license, Medicare card, Department of Veteran’s Affairs ID, or a Brevard County School ID. Eastern Florida State College Students will continue to ride for free with their valid student ID that contains a sticker supplied by the EFSC security office. Community Traffic Safety Team: Members Wanted!
This is a reminder that due to the Thanksgiving holiday, our next CTST meeting is slotted for Tuesday, December 12, 2017, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Florida Highway Patrol Office conference room located at 3775 W. King St in Cocoa.

The Brevard County Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST) invites you and your organization to become an active member of our grass roots efforts to make our communities a safer place to live. The CTST is a locally based group of highway safety advocates that consist of law enforcement personnel, traffic engineers, transportation planners, as well as private industry representatives and concerned citizens, working together toward a common goal of reducing the number and severity of traffic crashes. We accomplish this through a comprehensive, multi-jurisdictional, multi-disciplinary approach.

Multi-jurisdictional means that we rely on the active participation of a broad range of local agency representatives for success and Multi-disciplinary means integrating the efforts of the 4 “E”, Engineering, Enforcement, Education and Emergency services.

In order to meet our goal and to exceed it, the Brevard County CTST needs your participation and support. These meetings are comprised of local people solving local problems.
These meetings provide a great opportunity to promote your activities and to learn more about other traffic-related on-goings in Brevard County.

In 2018, we will continue with our normal schedule of meeting at 9:00 AM, on the 4th Wednesday of each month (1/24/18).

If you have any questions, please contact me or our District 5 Community Traffic Safety Team Program Coordinator, Joe Steward, at joe.steward@dot.state.fl.us .

Local Officials Learn New Tools to Help Plan for Sea Level Rise
UF Geoplan, the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization (SCTPO), the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council (ECFRPC), and Florida Sea Grant held a technical training on the Sea Level Scenario Sketch Planning Tool, an application developed by UF Geoplan and FDOT to help with planning for resiliency during the transportation planning process.

Representatives from multiple municipalities, tpos, committees, consulting firms, and citizen groups were present. They learned about sea level rise, current data, and the sketch tool. They then were able to complete exercises with the tool, helping to deepen their understanding of the tool's features.

The training was followed by a findings meeting for the recent Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment that the ECFRPC and the SCTPO have been working on together. This information will be reported to the SCTPO committees and board in February 2018.
