Heartland's Barn Dance: A Huge Thank You!

Over 250 people came out on Saturday,
September 23rd to experience the magic of  Heartland at our Barn Dance. It was a beautiful (albeit hot!) afternoon, and p eople showed up in droves to listen to fantastic live music by Casey Day and the Dimestore Duo , snack on delicious plant-based food donated by    Willy Street Co-op ,   Madison Sourdough Miller & Sons Supermarket , and  Festival Foods , and sip on cold tasty brews from our frie nds at  Ale Asylum ! We hope everyone enjoyed visiting with our rescued farm animal family. Our new Executive Director, Jen Korz, had a fabulous time talking with all of you!

A special shout-out to those of you who became Stable Supporters at the Barn Dance! April, Chachi, Hugs, Reggie, Joan, Mick, Harvey & Zeus are all thrilled to have sponsors!

Rosie the duck & Junebug the hen are still looking for sponsors! Can you believe no one has sponsored either of these two? You can change that with your monthly donation!

Welcome, little Harvey!

Earlier this month, we welcomed Harvey to the sanctuary. Harvey is a young male potbellied pig. He is about 10 months old, and just a wee little guy! He was rescued by a nearby animal shelter, and a staff member there fostered (and fell in love with) him. Unfortunately, Harvey could not get along with her dogs (dogs and pigs aren't a good match, sadly) and Harvey needed a new home. Now Harvey is keeping our staff and volunteers entertained - and busy! Harvey enjoys breaking out of his pen, sneaking bites of chicken food, and helping himself to goodies in the barn fridge during animal care shifts. He is one smart, curious little pig!

Harvey is in the process of getting acquainted with our two other male potbellied pigs, Percy and Tank. It's going well, and we are quite confident the three of them will be snuggling together at night once the weather gets colder!

Say hello to Brenda & Bailey!

This month we also welcomed Brenda and Bailey to the barn! These closely bonded girls were found homeless, neglected and sick. They spent some time with Heartland's Avian Consultant, Quincy, until they were well enough to come to Heartland. Brenda and Bailey do everything together, and are very curious! They have been debeaked, which means that the tip of their beaks has been removed. This practice is done in the egg industry to try to prevent i njury from chickens pecking each other in stressful and crowded conditions. Thankfully, Brenda and Bailey are not extreme cases and can still eat normally. The girls initially spent some time in our office trailer but are now rooming with Pandora and Xena and enjoying everything chickens love: scratching, dust bathing, and basking in the sun.

Would you consider sponsoring Brenda or Bailey? They don't have sponsors yet!

September Volunteer of the Month: Pete Corby
Meet Pete, our September Volunteer of the Month! Pete started volunteering with Heartland early this year, and we quickly noticed his talent and passion for building and construction. He recently constructed a brand new shelter for the goats, sheep and llamas (which they absolutely love) and a new mini pig shelter! He also plans to work on a second goat & sheep shelter this fall. Thank you, Pete, for using your amazing skills to help out Heartland's animals! We so appreciate your time and dedication! Read more...
Thank you to our fantastic intern, Jarod!
Jarod has been interning with Heartland since mid-September and to be honest, we wish he could stay forever! Jarod comes to Heartland from Illinois (he makes the drive every week!) and is such a help around the sanctuary. He works the morning animal care shifts and has been helping with construction projects, set up and clean up for special events, organizing the Heartland merch store, and much more. His dedication to the Heartland animals, sense of humor and kind personality make him a pleasure to work with!
Want to volunteer with us?
Yep - that's Fonzie the rooster bundled up like a baby. If you want to have experiences like this, check out our upcoming Volunteer Information Session on Wednesday, October 25th at 7 PM at the Verona Public Library. This is the perfect place to get started if you want to become a member of the Heartland volunteer family. Learn more here
