Be Storm Ready
How the City Prepares to be Storm Ready
The City of Burlingame's Public Works Department has been working to minimize flooding with the implementation of storm drain improvement projects as outlined in the
Capital Improvement Program. Here are some ways the City prepares to be storm ready:
- Monitoring and controlling stormwater pump stations.
- Allocating additional staff on standby during storms.
- Inspecting and cleaning trash capture devices installed in catch basins as well as "hot spot" areas that historically have issues during storms.
- Conducting weekly street sweepings to help remove leaves and debris off the ground and out of storm drains.
What the Community Can Do to Be Storm Ready
Community members are encouraged to take precautions and prepare for the upcoming storm season. Here are some tips on how you and your neighbors can be storm ready:

Temporary Closure of Washington Field
Healthy turf is important to maintain safe playing surfaces for our field users. In order to accommodate annual turf renovation, the Washington ballfield will be closed from November 20 through January 2.
We apologize for this inconvenience. The renovation will include soil aeration to reduce compaction, over-seeding to re-establish turf in bare areas, and, the addition of compost and soil to level low areas to protect the seed
Though the renovation will likely only take one day, time is needed for the grass to establish. Typically, this is achieved in a 6 week time period. Soil temperature, moisture and availability of sunlight can greatly impact the length of time needed to establish the turf. We use large grow mats to help combat the cold temperatures and lack of sunlight. These will be moved every 2 weeks.
Thank you for your patience as we work to establish healthy and safe playing surfaces for people and pets. Please direct any questions to the Parks Supervisor at (650) 558-7335

Carolan Complete Streets Project Update
As a part of the Carolan Avenue Complete Streets Project, Ghilotti Construction Company will be performing asphalt paving on Carolan Avenue between Broadway and Oak Grove Avenue, December 4- 7, all day, weather permitting.
What to Expect During Construction
- Grinding will be performed in the parking and right lane areas on December 4.
- Construction hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. During construction hours, two lanes of through traffic (one lane each way) will be maintained at all times. The contractor will use flagmen or use barriers to direct vehicular traffic.
- There may be possible delays for businesses and residents to access property driveways and side streets. The Contractor will be paving and will need to block off side streets and driveways for short periods of time until the asphalt can accept vehicular traffic.
- Temporary parking restrictions on all streets will be posted at least 48 hours in advance.
- There will be uneven pavement during various stages of the paving activities.
We will do our best to minimize any disruption caused by the construction. Field inspectors will be present on the job site and will be happy to answer your questions or provide assistance if needed. If you cannot locate an inspector during construction, or have any questions regarding the project, please contact Nick Panayotou at (650) 642-5299. Your patience during construction is greatly appreciated.
