Dr John Beard joined the WHO's Department of Ageing and Life Course in January 2009.
He served as a lead writer and editor of the first
World Report on Ageing and Health, which was released in 2015. The
World Report on Ageing and Health was the foundation for the 14th Global Conference, along with
the
Global Strategy and Action Plan on Ageing and Health
, which Dr Beard oversaw development of, and the IFA is pleased to welcome his expertise to the Conference.

Ms Alana Officer - Senior Health Adviser, Ageing and Life-Course, WHO
Ms Alana Officer will be presenting a Master Class on

Ms Alana Officer
joined the WHO in 2006, originally serving as Coordinator for the Disability and Rehabilitation Team (DAR) from 2007 - 2014.
In 2014, Ms Officer made the move to
the Department of Ageing and Life Course where she lead the development of the World Report on Ageing and Health, as well as supporting the development of the Global Strategy and Action Plan on Ageing and Health. She currently oversees the Organization's work on age-friendly environments, which promises that her valued experience will be a vital addition to the 14th Global Conference on Ageing.

Ms Brenda Appleton - Chair, Transgender Victoria
Ms Brenda Appleton
retired in 2009 after 35 years working in the corporate sector and is now heavily involved volunteering with a wide range of community groups, including the LGBTI communities in Melbourne (for nearly 20 years).
She is the Chair of Transgender Victoria, co-chair of LGBTI Taskforce set up by the Victorian Government, a member of the Victorian Mental Health Expert Taskforce and a
member of Victorian Government's Elders Abuse Roundtable
.
She was inducted onto the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2017.
Ms Appleton is passionate about using her lived experience in an effort to improve the health and wellbeing of trans and gender diverse people across Victoria and undertakes a lot of LGBTI and trans and gender diverse training and education for Government, Corporates and NGOs.

A Human Rights Based Approach to Long Term and Palliative Care for Older Persons
A human rights based approach to palliative care would empower patients and families, as well as palliative care teams to identify and request the highest possible quality of life during serious illness, by educating them their rights, including their right to palliative care.
A rights based approach to palliative care views older persons, their families, and care providers as rights holders entitled to the highest attainable standard of health, as well as the right to be free from cruel and inhumane treatment. This standard, when applied to life-limiting illness recognizes dying as a natural part of life (WHO Definition of Palliative Care).

Addressing Inequalities in Older Populations Living with Frailty
This symposium by Canadian Frailty Network (CFN) will present the inequalities and challenges faced by older women, LGBTQI older persons, and older Indigenous persons, and provide potential solutions.
Session Excerpt:
Frailty is a common yet under-recognized health state associated with functional decline, chronic multiple health problems and poor health outcomes in late life. The older LGBTQI community living with frailty face unique health care issues in late life since they're more likely to live alone and less likely to have a partner or children and thus more likely to be reliant on care from close friends and formal care services.
In addition, Indigenous people have been shown to have poorer health and social outcomes than non-Indigenous people, with markedly higher frailty levels at younger ages. Seriously ill older Indigenous adults living with frailty also experience poorer health care services, some of which may be a function of being remotely located.

Three key theme-setting age-friendly workshops announced!
The
IFA is pleased to announce three exciting workshops on age-friendly en
vironments (AFEs) to be conducted by leading international experts in the field of age-friendly at the 14th Global Conference.
The following workshops will foster dialogue on important facets of age-friendly:
- Workshop 1 - How can we create environments that enable older people to do what they have reason to value?
- Workshop 2 - How can we build and sustain connections within and across local planners and other decision-makers?
- Workshop 3 - How can we show the impact of our age-friendly efforts?
As 'Age-friendly Environments' is one of four themes at the Conference, a comprehensive age-friendly program is being put into place that will address diverse topics under the umbrella of age-friendly. To read more about the age-friendly theme, click here.
