MT. TIMOTHY SKI AREA NEEDS YOUR IMMEDIATE SUPPORT!
The Mt. Timothy Ski Area is a family ski area in the central/south Cariboo region near Lac La Hache, BC, operating since 1987 by the Mt. Timothy Ski Society. Mt. Timothy is unique in that we are one of the few remaining hills in Western Canada not privately owned and managed, but a volunteer-driven not-for-profit Society registered under the BC Society Act. Further, we are outside municipal area boundaries, so are not supported by local services taxes; we must rely on ticket sales, donations, fundraising events, grants, and in-kind volunteer time.
Due to a number of factors, including the extensive wildfire situation in our region and subsequent evacuation of our communities, Mt. Timothy was not able to generate season pass revenue that we normally do during this time, and lost a key period for our annual fundraising. Although we have a balanced operating budget and were able to generate a small profit last year, we have past debt hanging over us, and Mt. Timothy currently does not have sufficient funds to prepare for and operate during the upcoming 2017/18 season.
We kindly ask that you consider supporting Mt. Timothy with a donation or contribution, or a pledge, so we can offer this region that has suffered so much loss already, an affordable, winter-time recreation area in 2017/18. An amount of $50,000 by mid-October 2017 should provide sufficient funding to allow us to begin the recruitment process to replace key staff and begin the required work on our equipment to be prepared for a December 15th opening.

Something for Everyone (Including Business) in Budget Update - but BC Chamber Flags Potential Cumulative Effects
VICTORIA, September 11, 2017 - The BC Chamber of Commerce congratulates the new B.C. government for tabling a balanced budget that looks to invest in our residents while supporting small businesses ability to prosper through targeted tax measures, but warns of a potential cumulative effect to our strong tax competitiveness when viewed in relation to recent federal tax changes.
The 2017 budget update maintains a number of initiatives strongly advocated for by the BC Chamber network to support future economic growth, such as maintaining efforts to make the Provincial Sales Tax more competitive by removing the PST on electricity bills for business and restoring the small business tax benefit for credit unions.
"It's good to see the provincial government balancing its budget and continuing to invest in a sustainable economy - targeting its investments on reducing the small business tax rate and providing credit unions with a small business tax benefit helps ensure a competitive tax structure for small businesses looking to invest and hire more British Columbians," said Val Litwin, president and CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce.
The Budget 2017 update also maintains several targeted initiatives to support further economic development and job creation across the province, including: the 50 per cent reduction of Medical Service Premium, another extension to the Mining Flow-Through Share tax credit measures, and a further increase to the Small Business Venture Capital tax credit. While there are many positive initiatives to advance a sustainable economy, the upcoming increase to corporate tax rates and the carbon tax add another layer of uncertainty at a time of upcoming federal tax changes that will impact overall tax competitiveness that is needed for a strong economy.
"The BC Chamber has always stood up for greater tax competitiveness - and while we applaud the provincial government's focus on some targeted small business tax relief - the overall tax competitiveness for B.C. is facing uncertainty through tax measures at both the provincial and federal level." said Litwin. "With higher spending and increased taxpayer supported debt that could impact our AAA credit rating, ensuring tax competitiveness that gives our business owners' confidence to invest is made more of a necessity in the years ahead.

BC Chamber of Commerce is particularly worried about the impact on business from (1) a new tax on investment income in a corporation and (2) tough new rules for compensation in family businesses.
This is an issue where the power of the network can affect change if we all work together and use our voice of business.
Business groups across Canada are uniting on this front. 35 organizations from across the country have come together to form the Coalition for Small Business Tax Fairness -a unified voice to oppose the federal government's tax proposals that would dramatically change the way incorporated small businesses are taxed in Canada. The window of opportunity is closing. The Liberal and Conservative caucuses meet immediately after Labour Day and we are aiming to have MPs go to the meetings with businesses' comments in hand.
