CoLA Weekly

   September 29, 2017

On Tuesday we hosted our annual CoLA Donor Appreciation Reception. Over 150 donors and scholarship recipients were in attendance in our beautiful Creative Arts Center to celebrate the generosity of our patrons and wonderful accomplishments of our students. Our students benefit tremendously from the gifts of these kind people who invest in their futures, and it was magical to see many students and donors meet each other for the very first time. It was especially touching to hear the remarks by David Scheffner, a senior English major who shared his personal story about the impact his scholarship has made on his life. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house when he finished his remarks! President Schrader was present and delivered remarks that demonstrated her deep understanding and appreciation for the liberal arts. We thank her for taking the time to support CoLA and acknowledge our students and donors.

A special thank you to Jerry Noble and the Wright State Percussion Ensemble for providing beautiful marimba music during the reception and dinner, and to Stuart McDowell and the cast of Fiddler on the Roof for offering some delightful performances during the formal program.  Thank you as well to the many others in the Dean's Office, Creative Arts Center, and Event Services for coordinating all the logistics to make this event go smoothly.

Last week TEDxDayton announced its illustrious list of presenters for this year's event, set for Friday, October 20 at the Victoria Theatre downtown. This year marks the fifth anniversary and will offer a full day of inspiring and thought-provoking presentations and performances to a packed house of over 1,100 people. The selection process is extremely competitive, and I'm proud to say that of the 21 individuals slated to present (from over 140 applicants), four have a CoLA connection. Congratulations to La Fleur Small, Sociology, and to CoLA alumni Mohamed Al-Hamdani , Sociology , Steven Kniffley , M.P.A., and Adrian McLemore, Political Science. Tickets are selling fast but are still available online.

English is hosting an open house today from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Millett fourth floor area as part of the Homecoming/50th Anniversary Week events. There will be a showcase of student work, instant advising, information about student programs and organizations, and light refreshments. A highlight of the gathering will be brief readings and reminiscences by emeritus faculty. Please share this with other interested emeriti, faculty, and students who might want to stop by to network or catch up with old friends.

Damaris Serrano, Spanish, will give a lecture entitled The US by the Press: Impact of US Foreign Policies in Central America next Thursday, October 5, at 5:00 p.m. in the Millett Atrium. In her talk Damaris will explore how Central America became the site of contentious interactions in which the United States exerted and imposed its foreign policy. All are welcome to attend.

This week's featured member of the Dean's Student Advisory Board is DSAB President, Emma Mattingly. Emma is a junior majoring in Urban Affairs and minoring in Spanish. Throughout her time at Wright State, Emma has been involved with the Student Government Association and UCIE's International Friendship Program. She recently completed an internship at the Dayton International Airport and currently interns with the Downtown Dayton Partnership. Emma loves to travel, read, play volleyball, and spend time outdoors. Upon completing her undergraduate degree, Emma hopes to attend graduate school to earn her Master's in Public Policy.
