Historic Photo Project Underway
Over the course of his life, Santa Barbara-born Edson Smith collected more than 1,000 local, historic photos, dating from the 1870's to the 1940's. The collection includes photos from the 1925 earthquake, cultural landmarks, scenes from daily life, historic adobes, and Fiesta.

Until recently, these photos sat in storage at the Central Library. Now, thanks to a generous gift from John Woodward, donated

through the Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation, the entire collection will be identified, digitized and uploaded to the regional Black Gold Library Catalog system for our enjoyment. Ultimately, the photos will be uploaded to the Digital Public Library of America, where they will be available to everyone!
