Sexual Transmitted Infections Rise STD
According to the CDC, Center for Disease Control, sexually transmitted infections ( STIs) are among the most common infectious diseases. Annually, an estimated 19.7 million sexually transmitted infections occur in the United States alone. Worldwide, an estimated 499 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis vaginalis occur each year.
Some STIs are more prevalent in developing countries or in specific regions and may be imported into other countries by travelers returning from such locations due to c asual sexual relationships during travel to foreign countries.

One of the common, curable sexually transmitted infections, Trichomoniasis vaginalis (or "trich"), is caused by infection with a protozoan parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis.  Most women and men who have the parasite cannot tell they are infected.  An estimated 3.7 million people have the infection, but only 30% develop symptoms. It is more common in older women.

You can get the parasite from an infected person, transmitted through sexual relations. The most common infected part of the body is the lower genital tract.

Signs and Symptoms
If symptoms are prevalent (70% of people infected do not experience symptoms), they would include mild to severe inflammation within 5-28 days after infection, however others may develop symptoms much later. Both men and women may experience itching or burning, redness, soreness or discomfort during urination. Women may also experience a change in vaginal discharge with an unusual smell.

Pregnant women with trichomoniasis are more likely to have preterm deliveries and babies with low birth weight.

Diagnosis
Your ob/gyn would examine you and perform lab tests to diagnose the disease.

Treatment
Trichomoniasis vaginalis can be treated with oral medication, which is also safe for pregnant women. Once you contract trichomoniasis vaginalis, you can get it again. To avoid another infection, it's important for all of your sexual partners to get treated and wait 7-10 days to have sex again.

As with any STI, prevention includes safe sex practices, including monogamy and condoms.

If you have any concerns or questions about STIs, please make an appointment with your doctor.

USA Today reports data released last week by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) "found a 39% increase in labiaplasty surgeries in 2016, with more than 12,000 procedures."

Debra Johnson, the president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, "said the increase could be due to a number of cultural changes ranging from more infor mation about the procedure on social media to new grooming practices."

USA Today also reports data released by ASPS show post-pregnancy "mommy makeover" are increasing. A past ASPS survey reported 62% of mothers would consider a mommy makeover if cost wasn't an issue." Dr. Debra Johnson, president of the ASPS, "said surgeries can achieve a mom's desired look" but stated plastic surgery could not always replace "a good exercise routine and healthy diet."

Healthy Living: Eating Over Exercise healthyliving
A recent article in Medical Daily contests the age-old idea of eating vegetables_basket.jpg less and exercising more to lose weight - the more calories you burn, the more weight you lose.

Researchers at Loyola University of Chicago confirm that a healthy diet is the key to losing weight - and keeping it off.  "Our study results indicate that physical activity may not protect you from gaining weight," said Lara Dugas, lead author of the study and an assistant professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine,  in a statement .

Previous research has found exercise does help people lose weight by burning fat.  This new study, published by Peer J. Dugas and her colleagues claims that diet may be a more important component of weight loss than exercise.  The benefits of exercise on weight are notable, but most studies don't take into account its behavioral effects. For example, working out makes people hungrier, which means they are more likely to consume more calories. This suggests how much and what we eat has a bigger impact on our weight than exercise.

In the study 2,000 adults from the U.S. and four other countries: Ghana, South Africa, Jamaica and Seychelles, were measured on their physical activity levels and weight change throughout the course of three years.  Surprisingly, participants with higher rates of physical activity actually gained more weight than those with lower rates. American men who met the guidelines gained a half pound per year, while American men who did not meet the guidelines lost 0.6 pounds.

This shows there's no significant relationship between sedentary time at baseline, and subsequent weight gain or weight loss. The only factors that were significantly linked to weight at baseline were age and gender.

"From our study it is not evident that higher volumes of PA [physical activity] alone are protective against future weight gain, and by deduction our data suggest that other environmental factors such as the food environment may have a more critical role," concluded the researchers.

Exercise-focused weight loss regimens yield low success rates because we tend to poorly estimate calories we consume and calories we burn. For example, a 2010  study found when participants were asked to consume the amount of food they believed they burned in calories, they ended up eating two to three times the amount of calories they burned. This suggests calorie expenditure doesn't really count for much.

Diet is a major factor in weight control; portion sizes and what we're eating is crucial to maintaining a healthy body weight. To lose weight and improve health, we need to both eat well and find the time to exercise.
