A Message from VP Benton
Hi Folks,
Allan here at the SVA Vice Principal's desk. Today I'm going to talk just briefly about our bus service and how that service is tied into our school and our policies.
We have several things that happen on our campus outside of the normal school day that we still consider to be part of school, when we are responsible for our scholars. Some of these things include our a
fter school programs, sports, activities, clubs, and today's topic: on the school bus.
Whether riding between home and school or to and from field trips or sporting events, students are our responsibility and are
representatives
of our school whenever they are on the bus.
When coming and going from school on the bus, the driver of the bus is in an extremely difficult position. This individual is responsible not only for driving a busload of students safely from one point to another, but also monitoring and sometimes attempting to manage behaviors while driving. We want to make sure that we do all that we can to minimize any behavior concerns so the driver can stay focused on the road.
At SVA, we hold our students accountable to the same level of respect and behavior on the bus as we would expect at school. The bus ride is, in fact, part of the school day and is an extension of the school itself. All of our school policies still remain in effect while scholars are on the bus.
Riding on the bus is a privilege provided to our students and can be revoked at any time. We often maintain a waitlist of students waiting for a seat on our more popular route. Repeated behavior issues on the bus are grounds for revocation of riding privileges.Our policies allow for a student to receive up to 3 infractions in any school year. Upon the third infraction, the student would no longer be allowed to use the privilege of the bus. We also reserve the right to remove a student with fewer than 3 incidents if the level of the infraction warrants it.
Administration utilizes cameras on the buses, information from the driver, and sometimes riding along on the bus, to ensure that students respect the driver and abide by school policies and receive appropriate intervention or consequences when they do not. This is also true for all field trips associated with the school.
Our desire is that all families who need bus service have the opportunity to do so, and that all can expect that the bus ride will be calm and safe, whether to and from school, or off on a longer trip. Please help us by reminding your scholar that the bus is part of the school, the rules and policies of the school still apply, and encouraging them to follow those rules in an effort to keep themselves, and others, safe.

PS: Did you know?
Our board provides bus transportation to ensure equal access to our school for those who might not otherwise be able to get out to our campus. Unlike school districts, we do not receive additional transportation funding from the state and instead must pay for this service out of our general fund budget. The cost of this service breaks down to about $40 per month per bus rider at SVA.

SVA Mathletics
The mathletics elective started their international competition this week! Students in this winter elective participate in Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle school Students along with 100,000 students from more than 30 countries around the world. This year we have a team in each division, with every student approaching 5 contest problems each month. (In our class, we work through problems together, exploring critical thinking and creative problem solving in preparation for our contests.) Our next contest is December 13. If you know some of our

Expanding Your Horizons
Several SVA students participated in Expanding Your Horizons, a
conference for girls interested in science, engineering, and technology The day included workshops presented by women who work in careers typically dominated by men. These hands-on seminars provide an opportunity for young women to experiment in specific areas of interest, such as engineering or chemistry. SVA's own Carlie Crook won an award in a pretend tweet writing competition.

SVA PTO Family Skate
Coming up on December 3, SVA PTO will host it's annual Family Skate at Roller Towne. This year's event will include a Tricky Tray raffle.

School Breakfast and Lunch
Did you know that breakfast is available each school morning beginning at
7:45? It is!
You can pay for meals with cash or check (get an envelope in the school office) or online with our payment service
myschoolbucks.com. You will need to register, create an account and provide an ID number for every student you're including. An app is available so you can easily use this service on your smartphone. If you need to access your student's ID number, please call your school's front office.
School breakfast will be available at both schools before the school day begins. The cost for breakfast is $1.25.
The cost for lunch is $2.00. Applications for free or reduced price lunch will be sent home with your child on the first day of school.

Substitute Custodian Needed
The Academies Charters is seeking a backup daytime custodian. F
ingerprint clearance is required.
Substitute Teachers Needed
The Academies Charters have an experienced and dedicated teaching staff, but we are always looking to expand our sub list.
If you or someone you know has the desire to be a substitute teacher at our amazing school, has a bachelor's degree, has passed the CBEST, and is willing to get a substitute credential and fingerprint clearance we would love to grow our team.
Substitute Instructional Aides Needed
The Academies Aide Subs minimum requirements are a high school diploma and fingerprint clearance.
