Volunteers NEEDED!
The Poly Science Department will be hosting their sixth annual Fall STEM Competition on Monday, November 20, 2017. They are in need of approximately 16 volunteers who can serve as judges at each of the competition tasks throughout the day. Judges will make an impact on more than 100 Poly students that are expressing an interest in STEM. Judges are encouraged to arrive at around 7:45/8:00 AM for coffee and donuts before the competition starts at 8:30 am. Judging will run through 1:30pm, followed by lunch, which will be provided. Many alumni have enjoyed the experience of volunteering for this event in the past and we hope you will consider serving as a judge again! Please email Poly physics teacher James Rittner at [email protected] as soon as possible if you are able to join us and if you have any questions.

Alumni Directory Project Underway
Keeping Poly alumni connected is the utmost importance to us, as we know our Poly family network is strong, vast, & invaluable. Therefore, we have hired a company to update and publish a new alumni directory. The company is PCI and they will be mailing postcards and making phone calls over the next few months asking alumni to update their personal data for the directory. Please rest assured the information gathered will only be used to create the updated alumni directory and will not be shared or sold to any 3rd party solicitors. Once all data is compiled, the directory will be available for all alumni to purchase. Contact the BPI Foundation at [email protected] or 410-889-7659 if you have any questions about this project and we look forward to your participation! Go Poly!

New English Teacher Spotlight: Sameera Mukhtar
September 5th was a new beginning of sorts for Ms. Sameera Mukhtar. After several years working within the educational arena as support staff, Ms. Mukhtar began teaching English three years ago at Baltimore City College. After two years of teaching at City, she now teaches English in our English Department headed by Ms. Karen White. Ms. Mukhtar is originally from India and spent part of her younger years in the Middle East. She earned her degree and teaching certificate from UMBC. Married with three children, one in elementary school in the city, one in school in Columbia, Maryland and one in College at the University of Maryland, College Park, Ms. Mukhtar finds herself involved in all levels of education. In addition to teaching and working with her students here at Poly, Ms. Mukhtar enjoys being in the great outdoors, reading and the theatre. She shares her experiences in these areas with her students on a daily basis helping them to see the value of education from her vast experiences in travel. Congratulations on your move to Polytechnic and we wish you much success in the coming years.

BPI Arts Update
  • Artist lecture series in the new BPI Gallery
The Poly art and history departments have collaborated to launch a new artist talk series at Poly in the new Baltimore Polytechnic Institute Gallery! Each month a different professional artist will have a show in the gallery and will give an artist talk to students in attendance. This has become an exciting piece of the curriculum for the visual arts program here at Poly. Mr. Headley and Mr. Gregg from the history department have integrated these talks into their curriculum, creating an amazing partnership between our art department and our history departments!
  • One of our students, Kailah Foreman, a senior in the AP art program here at Poly, will have her self portrait titled "unknown to the self" on display at the Walters Art Museum for the Maryland art education association exhibition. The reception will be on Saturday, November 18 at the Walters Art Museum at 12:00. There will be an awards presentation at 12:30, and a reception at 1:30!
  • Finally, the art department is partnering with the Social Justice Sewing Academy, an organization based out of California and working with Harvard to create social justice quilts. A guest artist from Boston flew in a few weeks ago to work with our students and teach them quilt making techniques. 180 poly students each designed and made a 15 x 15" quilt block highlighting is social justice issue that they are passionate about. These blocks will be combined to make four 56' x 56' quilts that will go on display nationally. They will be displayed at the African-American Museum in DC and travel across the country ending in the Oakland Museum of Fine Art! We are also working on getting a book published, highlighting the quilts made by our Poly scholars. This incredible opportunity to empower our student's voices was made possible by the BPI foundation and alumni from the Class of 1963. Many thanks!
