We recommend you attend the course-talk so you will be completely informed of all details regarding the event.  The Head USAT Referee will be available to answer any and all  USAT-related questions.

KIDS COURSE TALK INFORMATION
The Koz Events Race Directors HIGHLY RECOMMEND each parent and their child attend our Kids Course Talk, Sat. at 2 PM, at the Race Packet Pickup/Expo Area, (if your child did NOT participate in the Kids Pre-race Clinic), for the safety of your child and others when participating in the race. Parents will NOT be allowed in the Race Transition Area or to assist their child during the race per USA Triathlon rules. Each child is responsible for knowing their race course, transition area, and USA Triathlon rules. Our Kids Course Talk will be given by our USA Triathlon Certified Youth & Jr. Coach, Judi Carbary, to review the kids race course, transition area, and USA Triathlon rules.
 
Pre-Race Check-In Policies: 
  1. All athletes must attend ONE pre-race check-in to pick up their race materials (Friday or Saturday). All relay members must be present to receive their packet, or we will split up the relay-packet for each participant. 
  2. It is mandatory for all athletes to BRING THEIR ID to the pre-race check-in. We will not give any athlete their bib number without a valid ID. 
  3. You must sign waiver(s) to get your race materials.  
  4. You will be required to show proof of a USAT annual membership or purchase a one-day membership (if you haven't already purchased a one-day membership through event registration).
  5. FRIENDS AND/OR FAMILY MEMBERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PICK UP FOR AN ATHLETE - NO EXCEPTIONS. These events are USAT-sanctioned and USAT does not allow anyone besides the participant to pick up race materials.  The only exception is if you are the parent/guardian of a minor who is participating (under 18 years of age as of Dec. 31, 2017).
  6. Athletes who do NOT/cannot attend Friday or Saturday (and have not selected the VIP Option) will be required to pay a $10 (cash only) late fee on race morning in order to pick up their race materials. Late packet pickup on race morning is available starting at 5:30 AM PT near the Race / Swim start, at Venture Cove, on the north side of W. Mission Bay Dr.
If you would like to speed up the pre-race check-in process, print and sign the
ALL REGISTRATION QUESTIONS, CHANGES, INQUIRIES, UPDATES MUST OCCUR in person at the Pre-Race Check-Ins Friday / Saturday or on Race Morning.  

We will not be able to make any changes by email or phone. This includes: changes in event type, switching out a relay member, changing event division, etc.

EVENT TIMELINE:

Race Day - Sunday, October 1st, 2017 - Bonita Cove
5:00 AM PT: Parking Lots Open
Arrive to the race site early to allow time for traffic and walking or riding from the parking lot to the transition area at Ventura Cove by the Bahia Hotel - you must be set up for Transition before 6:35 AM PT.
5:30 AM PT - Late check-in opens, Transition opens, Body marking 
6:35 AM PT - Transition area closed - Please be set before this time
6:40 AM PT - Race Starts
9:30 AM PT - Transition area re-opens to remove bikes & equipment - Bikes & Gear cannot be removed while racers are still undergoing active transitions. This is to ensure racers are not impeded from forward progress in their race. Please enjoy the Beer Garden, sign up for Post-Race Massage at the Rehab United Tent & other expo activities while you are waiting for transition to reopen for gear removal. Please be respectful to staff & volunteers DO Not Ask Them for exceptions. To remove your bike /equipment you must have your Bib number so we can release your bike out of the transition area.
10:15 AM PT - Awards presentation (approximately) - at stage in Expo
11:00 AM PT - Transition area closes (all bikes should be removed before this time)

PLEASE NOTE:   While we here at Koz Events are all animal-lovers/dog-owners, it is important to understand that  dogs are NOT ALLOWED at Mission Beach, on sidewalks, and/or park areas after 9AM per City of San Diego Parks & Recreation regulations Last year, SDPD was out there issuing citations to dog owners who brought their dog to the event. Therefore, we suggest you to leave your furry friend(s) at home.
These restrictions do not apply to service animals, as defined by the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA defines a service animal as any guide dog, signal dog or another animal individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability.

Bonita Cove Park, Mission Bay (located off West Mission Bay Dr.)
Take I-5 to the Sea World Dr. exit. 
Go west on Sea World Dr. to West Mission Bay Dr, go west. 
Race site will be on the left hand side in Bonita Cove Park.

Directions to Swim start, Late Registration (Sun ONLY), & Transition Area: 
Ventura Cove Park, Mission Bay (located off West Mission Bay Dr.) - Please see map below.

Take I-5 to the Sea World Dr. exit. 
Go west on Sea World Dr. to West Mission Bay Dr, go west. 
Ventura Cove will be on your right hand side, parking is located across the street at Bonita Cove Park.

Alternately,  take I-5 to the Grand/Garnet exit.
Turn right on Garnet Ave. west, Stay left at the fork to go on Grand Ave. 
Turn left on Mission Blvd (south) past W. Mission Bay Dr. 
Park in beach lots on either side of Mission Blvd just south of the roller coaster. 

Please note: Koz Events / San Diego Triathlon Series is not responsible for any fines/citations incurred as a result of improperly parking on public streets.

Please exercise caution when using online map services for driving directions, as they do not account for our race road closures or construction projects. 
TRANSITION AREA:

ONLY ATHLETES with wristbands are allowed in transition
After you finish your race you must show your Bib number and matching Bike number to remove your bike from transition.

FINISHED RACERS MAY NOT RE-ENTER THE TRANSITION AREA UNTIL ALL RACERS FROM THEIR EVENT HAVE TRANSITIONED TO THE RUN.

RACE NUMBER and timing chip INSTRUCTIONS:
Timing Chip: A Orange Timing Chip, attached to a VELCRO ANKLE STRAP will be included in your packet. You must wear this on your ankle throughout the race in order to receive a time. Please return this chip at the finishline. (Chips that are not returned will incur a $30 Replacement fee.)
Swim:  Wear the supplied colored-swim cap (certain colors go with certain wave start times). 
Bike helmet sticker:  Place one sticker on the front of your helmet.
Bike Frame Bib:  Place the bike bib # on the top tube of your bicycle frame (in packet). Numbers must be attached to bikes to allow access in/out of transition areas. 
Run:  Pin the bib number to the front of your t-shirt or onto your race belt. 

After-Party:  After the race enjoy the post-race expo and for our 21+ participants, an ice cold beer in the Beer Garden, complete with Live Music at the Finish Line. Please bring a suggested $5 cash donation for Challenged Athletes Foundation. 
A message from USAT to all age-group competitors:
 
Welcome to this USA Triathlon-sanctioned event!
 
You are racing under the USAT Competitive Rules. In order to minimize any mis-understandings on race day, I hope you will take the time to read the following summary of the Position Violations, which you may know as the "drafting rules." I have reduced the Position Rules to the following concepts, which everyone can remember:
  • Ride on the right side of your lane.
  • Keep three bike lengths between yourself and the cyclist in front of you.
  • Pass on the left of the cyclist in front, never on the right.
  • Complete your pass within 15 seconds.
  • If passed, you must drop completely out of the zone, to the rear, before attempting to re-pass.
Remember, you are racing in a USA Triathlon sanctioned-event and there are USAT certified referees on the course to ensure fairness in the competition at all times. There will be NO WARNINGS if you commit a foul during competition. Triathlon is an individual event and you must take personal responsibility to understand the rules to avoid penalties. At the end of the race, all citations by the marshals are reviewed by the Head Referee who then decides if a penalty should be assessed. The Head Referee's ruling is FINAL in the case of Position Violations and there are no protests and/or appeals of Position Violations. 

Marshals commonly cite the following violations:
  • Position: Riding on the left side of the lane without passing.
  • Blocking: Left side riding and impeding the forward progress of another competitor.
  • Illegal Pass: Passing on the right.
  • Overtaken: Failing to drop back three bike-lengths before re-passing
  • Drafting: Following a leading cyclist closer than three bike lengths and failing to pass within 15 seconds.
Though Position Violations carry a time penalty for first offense, two citations will result in an additional penalty. Please note that if you are cited for three violations, you will be disqualified. Be sure to check the penalty sheet before you leave the race site and have a chat with the head referee if you have any questions.

Make sure your helmet is a CPSC approved model. All helmets legally sold in the US are CPSC approved but, if you purchased your helmet in a different country, it might be illegal for use in USAT sanctioned-events.

While on your bike, always have your chinstrap securely fastened - before, during and after the event! The chin strap rule is easy to follow, so don't forget - that's a DQ!

Wear your race numbers, don't leave your trash on the course, and don't carry and/or use any portable audio devices.

Remember to treat other athletes, volunteers, and officials with courtesy and consideration. Failure to do so is called Unsportsmanlike Conduct and you will be disqualified.
