Jesus invites us to go on a journey - we call it discipleship. It is a sojourn that is meant both to form us more into the image of Christ through the disciplines of study, worship, prayer, service, and generosity; as well as to strengthen us in becoming powerful agents for the good that God is doing in our world. In each of the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, Jesus sends the disciples on a mission - the intent of which is, through their actions, to reveal the Realm of God. We know that in these gospels, the disciples represent each of us - the church. When Jesus speaks to them, he speaks to us. As they were sent, so are we.
This mission is about extending the blessing of health and wholeness to all of creation, because we are certain that this is ultimately what God desires. The world is broken and hurting and we are called to be a movement for wholeness among its many fractured pieces. We are agents of grace, on a journey that makes known the generosity of God through our own practice of the same.
Our faithful financial stewardship is one way we work against the powers that harm and divide. Our generosity funds the mission and ministry that we are deploying as a sign that God's Realm is among us.
On October 15th, we will begin a Journey to Generosity as a preparation for determining our investment in the ministry and mission of Slash Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
The journey will conclude on Commitment Sunday as part of worship on November 4th and I hope you will be intentional about being with us.
God has done, and continues to do remarkable things through us and with us - things that matter in our community! Your prayers and your participation are key to helping us advance further on the pathway of discipleship. We know that when the early church gathered, they did so with glad and generous hearts and that there was no need among them (Acts 2). We desire such a spirit of true community to be among us. I look forward to considering with you what it means for us to be on a "Journey of Generosity", as we seek to be faithful disciples in this place.

Splinters from the Board

A Congregational Meeting will be held on October 22, 2017 immediately following worship. We encourage all to attend this important meeting in preparation for 2018.
Items to be discussed are nomination of 2018 officers and updates to Facility Use Guidelines that cover the new pavilion.
I want to thank you all for your generosity and all that you have shared for ministry this year. What you have given has been used to bless many. If you recall we approved the 2017 Ministry Plan with a $

deficit hoping that we would make up that difference. So far we have not been able to do that. Below is our Actual giving through September 30th verses the Ministry Plan with the deficit.
Ministry Plan total = $224,879
Giving received to date = $155,593

Looking Ahead to 2018 Leadership
It is that time of year again when our nominating committee will be asking people like you to be a part of Slash's leadership for 2018. If you are contacted by a member of our nominating committee, we hope that you will be willing to be a part of our leadership in continuing the growth of Slash Christian Church in serving our Lord! The members of the Nominating Committee include: Cathy Tillman, Lloyd West, Deborah Sadler, Olivia Gant, and Chad Baugher.

Outreach Opportunities
CROP HUNGER WALK - October 7th at 9:00 AM - Carter Park in Ashland.
Feeding the hungry - that is what the CROP Hunger Walk is about.
Sign up now for the CROP WALK. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:00 a.m.
There will be several churches participating in this year's walk.

SIGN UP TODAY! Let's make a difference and stop starvation. Walk, collect funds, rock, stroll in our effort to make our community more aware of the extreme hunger that occurs around the world. Your donations do not just go to provide food to the hungry and provide clean water to drink, but also to provide the knowledge and tools in order to help prevent hunger by growing foods in harsh environments. Remember that 25% of the monies that we collect go straight to ACES right here in Hanover County. This is a time of awareness, fellowship, and it provides for a healthy walk in the process. Collection envelopes are available from Cathy Tillman. PLEASE participate in whatever way you wish: with donations, manning a water station, walking with our teams, or rocking in a rocker. Checks can be made payable to CWS/CROP. Let's get out there and make a difference! STOP Hunger and provide clean water.
ACES Food Drive - In conjunction with the CROP WALK this year, we are holding a major
drive for donations of non-perishable food and hygiene items for ACES. As always the following items are in constant need:
beef stew, rice, cereals, canned soups with meat, powdered milk, boxes of macaroni and cheese, pastas, peanut butter and jelly, toilet tissue, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes.
So pick up your bag on October 1st and return it filled with your donated items to church on October 8th and help support ACES.
There will be a simple soup and salad luncheon following worship on October 8th for all to attend.
Calling all Chefs for the Soup Luncheon:
We will be looking for some great chefs to bring in their favorite pot of soup on October 8th.
If you would be willing to provide a pot of your delicious soup, please contact Cathy Tillman or Nancy Farrell.
We are planning on soup, salad and crackers with beverage.
(And even though we say no desserts, you know there always are)
Reconciliation Offering - October 1st
Our efforts to promote healing, relationship and restoration in the whole family of God are enlivened by funds from this offering providing for programs of leadership development, curriculum for dialogue and
learning, and partnerships within the Church and our
communities. Your generous giving to Reconciliation Ministry is transforming lives and strengthening Christ's witness in the world that we love one another, even as Christ continues to love us! Give to the Reconciliation Offering collected on October 1st.
YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE:
We - wonderful Slash members - collected a total of $1215.00 as a donation to the Alexander Home Fund. Through faith, these brothers are expected to be in a safe, secure and healthy home environment. God puts us in the right place at the right time! You have also generously donated $935 for hurricane relief. The check is already en route to Disciples Mission Fund! THANK YOU!

FALL FESTIVAL - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 29TH
The annual Fall Festival will be on Sunday, October 29th at 4:30 pm. at Slash. There will be a meal at 5:00 pm where every family is asked to bring either two side dishes or a side dish and a dessert. There will be a Scavenger Hunt, Costume Contest, Bonfire, Face Painting, Cake Walk and Trunk or Treat!

Welcome to the new school year and to youth ministry at Slash.
Just a reminder that Youth Group at Slash includes 6th-12th graders. We held a youth and parent meeting recently and selected parents and youth to serve on a search committee to find a new youth director. Thanks to Angie Dalton, Ruthie Weeks, Meredith Farrell, Kendall Dalton, and Michael Peterman. We hope to interview a candidate soon, but for now Rev. Michael will be meeting with the youth as well as parents and other volunteers when needed.
The Youth planned some exciting events for the Fall. Please put these on your calendar.
- October 1st, 5-6:30 pm, Youth Group at the church
- October 7th, 8:30-11 am, CROP Walk and Donuts after, meet at Carter Park in Ashland
- October 15th, 5-6:30 pm, Youth Group at the church
- October 28th, 10 am, Youth Cake Bake, we will bake and decorate cakes for the Fall Festival Cake Walk at Slash the next day. Location TBD.
- October 29th, 4:30-6:30 pm, Fall Festival, wear your costume and help organize and present games for the kids of Slash.
COMING ON NOVEMBER 5th:
Bible Bread Breakers
at Panera in Virginia Center Commons. We will meet from 5-6:30 to eat and study the Bible.
COMING LATER: We talked about other events that we have not scheduled including: 2 youth group meetings a month, one service project a month, Christmas Caroling, attend a VCU Basketball or Flying Squirrels Game, coffee outings, see the Christmas Lights, Bowling, go to the Goochland Drive In together. The group would also like to plan a mission trip for next summer.

FELLOWSHIP CAFE
W
e have a group of dedicated folks who make the coffee and get café set up each Sunday morning ---- but we rely on volunteers to bring the snacks.
If you can contribute donuts, fruit, or pastries for a Sunday, please sign up by the kitchen or contact Kathleen in the church office or Carolyn Putnam.
Coffee is so much better, with a donut to dunk into it - while we fellowship with each other.

Thank you for being there for me in every imaginable way during Tom's brief illness and passing. Many visitors to Tom's service made comments about how loving our church family is - and how the love, compassion and support shown radiates our faith and love of the Lord. In this time of sadness, Slash witnessed to so many. Thank you all for your encouragement, prayers and food. Our family is truly blessed to be part of this wonderful family of Christ. We want to extend to you our deepest gratitude for the love and support your gave our mom, Carolyn Putnam, and our stepdad, Tom, during the short course of his illness, and in his passing. During that sorrowful time period, you all daily brought light, hope and peace to our mom in so many ways - hospital visits, phone calls and text messages, social media posts, prayers...the list goes on and on. We are truly blessed to call so many of you friends and our mom is truly blessed to have you as her church family. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Craig Springs Fall Work Weekend;
Please register by October 1st
Work Weekend is a free event open to anyone. We provide food, indoor lodging, and friendly fellowship in exchange for your labor. We have tasks suitable for persons of all ages and abilities. Come
alone, or with a group. We want YOU there!
The help we receive from work weekend volunteers is the lifeblood of our outdoor ministry program.

Flower Ministry
The 2017 flower chart is posted by the church office. If you would like to purchase flowers in memory of or in honor of a loved one please sign up on the flower chart, fill in an order form and return it to the office. You may email or call the office (798-4520) to order sanctuary flowers. The sanctuary flower price is $27.00 with checks made payable to Slash Christian Church. Orders do not have to be prepaid.
