  LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
It's Time to Mobilize To Sustain Governor Hogan's Veto of Mandatory Paid Leave Legislation

It's finally starting to feel like fall, and that means it's the time of year that our legislators are starting to plan their strategies for the 2018 Legislative Session that begins on January 10th.

For many, that includes an effort to overturn Governor Larry Hogan's veto of the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act, commonly referred to as the Mandatory Paid Sick Leave Act. Along with the veto, the Governor created a Committee on Paid Leave Policy, and as part of that effort, they have been asking anyone who would like to give input to the Committee to fill out this survey.

As the Voice of Business for Howard County, the Chamber strongly opposes the Mandatory Paid Sick Leave Act, because we believe employers should remain free to determine their own leave policies that are consistent with business operating needs. We supported the Governor's veto and wrote a letter of support offering to assist the Committee on Paid Leave Policy to ensure a better plan can be implemented.

We encourage you, our members, to make your voices heard by taking part in the survey linked above, and by contacting your legislators. We will talk much more about the issue of paid leave and many others at our annual Legislative Preview Breakfast on November 29th.
