GARCES RAM BAND:
THE BEAT GOES ON!

The original Garces band in 1948 was led by Mr. Robert Zachman.  Under his direction, they played at school assemblies, plays and dances, as well as for the Miss Garces Day festivities and commencement ceremonies.

Over the decades and generations since, music and our band have evolved, thanks to the likes of Elvis, James Brown, the Beatles and Stones, Michael Jackson, and Buck and Merle, to name but a few.

Today's Garces Music Department is led by longtime directors Mr. Scott Smith (17 years) and Mr. Robert "Chile" Ortega (18 years).  Over those years they have developed a music program that includes an award winning marching band, a concert orchestra and a jazz band, all that are still an integral part of campus life at Garces today.

The music program is now housed in The Art of Music building on campus, donated by Frankie and E.G. Berchtold in 2013 for the use of the students at Perpetual Help School and Garces.

Thank you to all of our sponsors who helped to underwrite the event.  All of the funds raised through the BBQ go towards helping Garces provide an excellent Catholic education to our students.

A big shout out to our BBQ Chairs - Jenny Waguespack '89 and Suzanne Rogers.  They did an OUTSTANDING job.

If you weren't able to make it, or you really enjoyed last night's steak - good news! We have seasoned uncooked filet steaks available for purchase for $10 per steak. First come, first served.  You can stop by the office today to purchase them until they are gone.

Denise Limi
Director of Counseling

Hello Garces Family,

I can't believe we are almost half way through the first semester. Looking ahead, I wanted to point out that we have All School Testing Day on Wednesday, October 11th.  On this day, all 9th, 10th and 11th graders will be taking the Preliminary SAT (PSAT). Why Take the PSAT? Taking the PSAT in the 9th and 10th grades is a great way to get familiar with the SAT exam format, before taking the actual SAT.  Juniors must take the PSAT in order to compete in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Furthermore, it is great practice for those juniors who have not yet taken the SAT, and want to get familiar with the SAT Exam format.  We recommend juniors begin taking the SAT in the Spring of this year, beginning with the March 2018 exam.  The counselors have given each student a PSAT guide to help them prepare for the exam, including a full-length practice test with answers. Students may also visit collegeboard.org/psatpractice for additional sample questions and practice test answer explanations.  Score reports will be available online in December and the counselors will be reviewing them with students in early January. Although seniors will not be at school that day, we encourage them to work on their college applications and essays. As always, please don't hesitate to contact your student's counselor with any questions or concerns you may have.

Thank you and God Bless.
