Manhasset CASA's Last Year DFC Funding 
Focus on Sustainability & Engagement

Since 2008, Manhasset CASA has been supported by the Drug Free Communities Support Program.  Understanding that local problems need local solutions, we work with Manhasset representatives from our schools, community, parents and youth from Manhasset, Nassau County and New York State. Are you involved? 

With the start of the new school year, CASA seeks to reaffirm your commitment to the youth of our community. While we have reduced underage and binge drinking for our 8th and 12th grade students respectively, Manhasset youth also self report increases in depressive factors and prescription drug use ( 2017 Bach Harrison Prevention Needs Assessment Survey ).   With funding formally ending in September 2018, we need YOU to join our efforts. Lives are at stake - the newspaper and internet posts readily confirm this.  

Please join us on Thursday, October 5th at 9:00 a.m. in the Charlie Cardillo Community Room in the Central Administration Building.  Our quarterly Sector Meetings engage community members throughout the year along with our subcommittee meetings which address specific strategies to reduce substance misuse by our youth.  This Tuesday, October 3rd at 7:00 p.m., we collaborate with the Rotary Club of Manhasset at the Manhasset Public Library and co-host Everything You Need to Know about the Social Host Law.  On Wednesday, October 25th at 7:30 p.m. in Manhasset High School's Auditorium, we invite you to Forgiving Kevin: Losing a Son to the Opioid Epidemic. T he program will  also  feature the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) who will provide Opioid Education and Naloxone Training where participants will learn about the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose, how opioids affect the body/mind/mood, how Naloxone works and the steps necessary to respond to an overdose and administer Naloxone. Shed the Meds collects 100 pounds of Pharmaceuticals

Thank you Senator Elaine Phillips, the Nassau County Police Department and residents for your efforts to collect 100 lbs. of pharmaceuticals at the September 9th Shed the Meds event at Shelter Rock School. The drive-up and drop off program continues to offer residents easy access to dispose of old or unused medications!

You do not have to wait for a formal take back event to dispose of unwanted medications.  Residents can DISPOSE of unwanted medications at any Nassau County Police Department Precinct or Police Center. 

The disposal bin is located in the lobby. Accepted items include prescriptions, prescription patches, prescription medications, prescription ointments, over the counter medications, vitamins, sample medications and medications for pets. Please do not deposit needles, sharps, aerosol cans, thermometers, ointments (liquid or lotion), hydrogen peroxide, inhalers, medication from businesses and bloody or infectious waste.

Internet Safety Presentation for K-6 Parents
Shelter Rock/Munsey Park SCA Joint Parent Council Meeting

Manhasset's Elementary School Parents (K-6) are invited to an early Red Ribbon Week Parent Presentation on  Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. at Munsey Park Elementary School.

Helping Kids Make Smart Choices on the Internet features Sharon Galvin, a retired police officer from the Nassau County Police Department.  Ms. Galvin will discuss how parents can protect their children from danger on the internet, cyberbullying, and the consequences of inappropriate texting. 

Munsey Park and Shelter Rock Elementary School 5th/6th grade students will also hear from Ms. Galvin on Thursday, October 19 (Shelter Rock) and Friday, October 20 (Munsey Park) as part of an early Red Ribbon Week assembly.

Forgiving Kevin:  Losing a Son to the Opioid Epidemic
Opioid Education & Naloxone Training Available

Join Manhasset CASA during Red Ribbon Week on Wednesday, October 25th for  Forgiving Kevin: Losing a Son to the Opioid Epidemic .  The program features Larry Glenz, a lacrosse, football, and wrestling coach who was inducted into the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame.  Larry Glenz lost his son in 2010 to a heroin overdose. Now his passion is warning young people about the opiate crisis.

Opioid education and Naloxone training will also be provided by the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD). Naloxone is the antidote medication that reverses the effects of an overdose from opioids (e.g. heroin, methadone, morphine).  Participants will learn about the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose, how opioids affect body, mind and mood, how Naloxone works and the steps necessary to respond to an overdose and administer Naloxone.

Free Family Counseling & Education at Seafield 
Open to all Residents  

Seafield Center of Manhasset offers a free 30 minute consultation and a monthly Family Education Series for residents who are impacted by addiction. Manhasset CASA exists as a resource to reduce the illegal, underage use of alcohol, tobacco, & other drugs among its youth, before they are in trouble, by connecting parents, schools and the community as partners in the common goal.  In 2013, CASA was honored to receive its second five year Drug Free Communities Support Grant (DFC) by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).  Our goals are to reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults; and to establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, private nonprofit agencies, and federal, state, and local governments to support the efforts of our community coalition to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth.
