The Campbell Foundation Awards Grant to Develop Gene Editing Tool to Destroy Latent HIV Cells in Lymph Nodes
The Campbell Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Fort Lauderdale and dedicated to funding HIV/AIDS research, has awarded an $80,000 grant to Kristine Yoder, PhD, to develop a CRISPR-based gene editing platform designed to eradicate HIV. CRISPR stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. It is a novel genome editing technology that targets a tiny section of DNA and cuts it at a precise point. Yoder, an assistant professor of Cancer Biology and Genetics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, is developing the use of CRISPR to disable the HIV-1 provirus, that is, copies of the HIV-1 genome that latently reside in the DNA of infected host immune cells.

The procedure provides for a much more efficient and effective manner to localize and determine clinically significant, high-grade tumors in the prostate.

Two weeks after Hurricane Irma blew through South Florida, most work and school schedules are back on track. But in Homestead, located in the southernmost part of Miami-Dade County, there are some agricultural-based places of business that are experiencing a slower restart. During this time of seasonal transitions, some like Thi Squire, community garden manager of the Grow2Heal Garden at Homestead Hospital, find themselves doing cleanup instead of preparing the farm for the fall season.
