How to Prevent Negative SEO Attacks

Hopefully you caught our article in last month's Tourism Talk newsletter about what Negative SEO is. If you didn't and you're unfamiliar with this topic, take the opportunity to read it now so you'll have a better understanding of what we're talking about.

In this issue, we're going to cover the first practical step to preventing Negative SEO attacks, and that is using Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools) to setup email alerts.

By doing this, you'll receive an email letting you know when:
  • Your website is being attacked by malware
  • Your pages are not indexed
  • You have server connectivity problems
  • You get a manual penalty from Google
To get started, if you haven't already, connect your website to Google Search Console. (We're assuming you already have a Google account.)
  • On the Search Console home page, click the   button.
  • Enter the URL of your website (ex: http://www.tianb.com/)
  • Click Continue to open the site verification page.
  • Select a verification method to prove you own the site and follow the provided instructions.
Now, to setup the email alerts:
  • Login to your Google Search Console.
  • On the right side of the page, click the gear icon.
  • Click "Search Console Preferences".
  • On the next screen, enable email notifications.
That's it. If your website experiences any of the above mentioned issues, you'll receive an email letting you know.

There, that wasn't so bad, was it? Now you're one step ahead on protecting your online presence. Next time, we'll cover a much more important issue... protecting your backlinks.

Congratulations Alaina Lockhart!

Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business and Tourism
( Fundy Royal)
As a dedicated community organizer and volunteer, Alaina Lockhart is committed to the region that she grew up in, from the Bay of Fundy to the rolling hills of Kings County. Alaina is the Member of Parliament for the riding of Fundy Royal in New Brunswick and Chair of the Atlantic Caucus. She is the first woman ever elected to represent the riding, and has served as a member of the Standing Committees for Agriculture and Agri-Food, and for Veterans Affairs, two areas her constituents have consistently identified as priorities for the region.

Since her election, Alaina has presented two motions in the House of Commons focused on growing the economy and strengthening the workforce in Atlantic Canada, both of which passed unanimously. Most recently, her private members motion, M-39 Immigration as a Means of Growth in Atlantic Canada, mandates a Parliamentary study on ways to increase and retain immigrants to Atlantic Canada.

Prior to being elected to the Parliament of Canada, Alaina served as a municipal Councillor for the Village of Norton, and as the Director of the Royal District Planning Commission. As a member of the greater Sussex business community, she has been a small business owner since 2004, and is a recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Woman Entrepreneur Award.

Alaina holds a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Human Resource Management from the University of New Brunswick Saint John. Alaina currently lives in the Sussex area with her husband, Rick, and their youngest daughter, Lauren.
