Lessons of Parshat  תולדות
Parshat Toldot is filled with so much excitement! We learn about the moment Rivka hears that she will be having twin babies, to learning about the brothers who are completely opposite of each other, to discovering how Yaakov and Rivka trick Yitzchak into giving Yaakov the  ברכה of the בכור and  Yaakov running away to Charan. There are so many countless lessons that we can learn from Parshat Toldot and luckily, it provides us with so many teachable moments inside the classroom.
On Tuesday, Gan Aleph spent time focusing on how עשו sold his birthright to יעקב for a bowl of piping hot lentil soup. We decided to make our own delicious מרק עדשים since עשו made it sound so delicious! We examined a recipe for  מרק עדשים in עברית which included (carrots) גזר,  (red lentils) עדשים אדומים (celery) סלרי,(onion)בצל   ,(salt water)  מים  מלך and (pepper) פלפל. We washed, peeled, diced, measured and poured all the ingredients into a big pot and cooked it overnight. On Wednesday for חטיף, we were able to enjoy our delicious מרק עדשים and of course, we shared some of our soup with Officer Sal and the amazing Yavneh security crew.

In conjunction with Parashat Toldot which tells the story of famous twins, Yaakov and Eisav, Ganon Aleph spent time creating Venn Diagrams and learning all about opposites in order to see how people and things are both similar and different. Uriel, a student in Ganon Aleph, has twin siblings in third grade. We invited Tiferet and Noam into our classroom and filled out a Venn Diagram with ideas the students came up with comparing the two.The children discovered that they embodied many opposites, such as: boy-girl, taller-shorter, pants-skirt...etc. It was a chance for the students to look carefully and use their critical thinking skills, as they came up with creative and insightful ideas.

Practicing עברית in Grade 4
After learning a unit on question words in Hebrew, the students of 4A put their skills to the test and interviewed each other. They split up into groups of two or three and asked each other questions like, "How many siblings do you have?, When is your Hebrew birthday?, What is your favorite subject?, and What is one thing that makes you unique?" The students practiced their Hebrew speaking and writing skills and got to know their friends a little bit  better.

Writer's Workshop: Focus on Giving Thanks!
Second grade has a lot to be thankful for! This week during Writer's Workshop we introduced how to write a letter. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we focused on writing letters to someone we are thankful for. Students wrote about their appreciation for someone special. We cannot wait to share our letters soon just in time for Thanksgiving!

United States Veteran Addresses Yavneh Students
Yavneh third grade students were privileged to have a veteran visit their class. Major Doctor Alan Perlman was a doctor in the United States Air Force.  He spoke to the students about Veterans Day and why we should always thank soldiers for all they do for us.  So, THANK YOU Major Dr. Perlman for all you did and for coming and speaking to the children at Yavneh Academy.

Squishy Sale for Friendship  Circle
This was an exciting week in Yavneh!!  The Presidents of Yavneh's Friendship Circle, Richie Nadritch, Ariana Wisotsky, and Arielle Levy, organized a toy sale in school during lunchtime where they sold squishies.  For every child who bought a squishy, another squishy was automatically donated to a Friendship Circle child.  In addition, all proceeds from the sale are going straight to Friendship Circle.  Richie, Ariana and Arielle came up with this idea all on their own and worked hard to raise money for Friendship Circle. In the end they raised $310!!  Not only did they raise money for Friendship Circle, but the Presidents are also so excited to hand out all the donated squishies to the Friendship Circle kids.  They can't wait to see the smiles on their faces!!  This sale was so successful that the Presidents are planning another one before Chanukah.

Mr. Norbert Strauss Addresses Grade 8 on Kristallnacht
November 9-10, 1938 - Nazi soldiers went around smashing the windows and and burning the buildings of the Jews throughout Germany. Around 90 people were killed and more than 30,000 men were taken by the SA into concentration camps.
November 9, 2017 - On the 79th anniversary of Kristallnacht, Mr. Norbert Strauss, a Holocaust and Kristallnacht survivor, came to Yavneh Academy to speak to an intrigued crowd of eighth graders. Mr. Strauss lived in Frankfurt during the time of Kristallnacht. He had lived a regular life until then: went to yeshiva, went to shul, and was occasionally encountered by a young group of anti-Semitic children. Then, on November 9-10, 1938, the SS men began smashing and burning Jewish belongings. Mr. Strauss recalls being thrown into a spiral of events from having everything he had known leveled and burned, to not seeing his extended family ever again. Fortunately, his immediate family met up America. Mr. Strauss' father was on the St. Louis but was eventually able to sail to America, while his mother was able to acquire plane tickets out of Germany. Mr. Strauss shared a rare moment with Yavneh Academy and the eighth graders are grateful to have shared in his memories.
