Dear Reader,
Another heat wave in the Bay Area huh? Well this is typical fall weather isn't it? I do love fall- the colors, the crisp air, the sight of the creeping fog, the need for a light sweater in the morning that I toss off by 10am.
And the books! We are still combing through the lists to find the most enticing reading and entertaining material for you!
And we have some interesting author events on the calendar so be sure to check that out below. Two more this week alone!

Thank you to all who have been in for their book a month! It's fun to see what people are choosing these days. We want to tempt you with a few so see below.

Take care of each other and happy reading,

Luan

Light the Dark, Writers on Creativity, Inspiration, and the Artistic Process edited by Joe Fossler $17 What inspires you? That's the simple, but profound question posed to forty-six renowned authors in LIGHT THE DARK. Each writer begins with a favorite passage from a novel, a song, a poem-something that gets them started and keeps them going with the creative work they love. From there, incredible lessons and stories of life-changing encounters with art emerge, like how sneaking books into his job as a night security guard helped Khaled Hosseini learn that nothing he creates will ever be truly finished. Or how a college reading assignment taught Junot Díaz that great art can be a healing conversation, and an unexpected poet led Elizabeth Gilbert to embrace an unyielding optimism, even in the face of darkness. LIGHT THE DARK collects the best of The Atlantic's much-acclaimed "By Heart" series edited by Joe Fassler and adds brand new pieces, each one paired with a striking illustration. Here is a guide to creative living and writing in the vein of Daily Rituals, Bird by Bird, and Big Magic for anyone who wants to learn how great writers find inspiration-and how to find some of your own.

I, Eliza Hamilton by Susan Holloway Scott $15   "Love is not easy with a man chosen by Fate for greatness . . ."
As the daughter of a respected general, Elizabeth Schuyler is accustomed to socializing with dignitaries and soldiers. But no visitor to her parents' home has affected her so strongly as Alexander Hamilton, a charismatic, ambitious aide to George Washington. They marry quickly, and despite the tumult of the American Revolution, Eliza is confident in her brilliant husband and in her role as his helpmate. But it is in the aftermath of war, as Hamilton becomes one of the country's most important figures, that she truly comes into her own.
~didn't you want to know more about Eliza after the curtain fell?

Sleep Like a Baby by Charlaine Harris $25.99 In Sleep Like a Baby, the latest installment of the #1 New York Times Bestselling Charlaine Harris's Aurora Teagarden series, Robin and Aurora have finally begun their adventure in parenting. With newborn Sophie proving to be quite a handful, Roe's mother pays for a partially trained nurse, Virginia Mitchell, to come help the new parents for a few weeks. Virginia proves to be especially helpful when Robin has to leave town for work and Roe is struck with a bad case of the flu. One particularly stormy night, Roe wakes to hear her daughter crying and Virginia nowhere to be found. Roe's brother Philip helps her search the house and they happen upon a body outside... but it isn't Virginia's.

The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur $16.99  From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of milk and honey, comes her long-awaited second collection of poetry.  A vibrant and transcendent journey about growth and healing. Ancestry and honoring one's roots. Expatriation and rising up to find a home within yourself.
Divided into five chapters and illustrated by Kaur, the sun and her flowers is a journey of wilting, falling, rooting, rising, and blooming. A celebration of love in all its forms.

The Best Small Fictions 2017 edited by Amy Hempel $16  We've noticed an uptick in sales of short stories. I think many readers want something they can start and finish in a sitting, a counterbalance for the many difficulties we are facing in the country and world that will take much longer to resolve. This slim volume will give you much to think about long after the actual reading is done.

Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Machado $16
(Due Oct 3)
A highly anticipated debut by "one of the most ferociously gifted young writers working today" (Michelle Huneven)
In Her Body and Other Parties, Carmen Maria Machado blithely demolishes the arbitrary borders between psychological realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. While her work has earned her comparisons to Karen Russell and Kelly Link, she has a voice that is all her own. In this electric and provocative debut, Machado bends genre to shape startling narratives that map the realities of women's lives and the violence visited upon their bodies.
This book has been getting accolades everywhere and it's not even out yet! See what you think.

Today Will Be Different by Marie Semple
A brilliant novel from the author of Where'd You Go, Bernadette, about a day in the life of Eleanor Flood, forced to abandon her small ambitions and awake to a strange, new future. Eleanor knows she's a mess. But today, she will tackle the little things. She will shower and get dressed. She will have her poetry and yoga lessons after dropping off her son, Timby. She won't swear. She will initiate sex with her husband, Joe. But before she can put her modest plan into action-life happens. Today, it turns out, is the day Timby has decided to fake sick to weasel his way into his mother's company. It's also the day Joe has chosen to tell his office-but not Eleanor-that he's on vacation. Just when it seems like things can't go more awry, an encounter with a former colleague produces a graphic memoir whose dramatic tale threatens to reveal a buried family secret.
