Captivating and Thought-Provoking, Another Successful Summer of Learn from a Leader

by Adrienne Zicklin Kanter

While it may have been summer, things didn't slow down for WTS GNY.  Since 2014, the chapter has presented a robust summer roundtable series, Learn from a Leader, featuring women in senior positions in both the public and private sector.  These events offer members an opportunity in an informal setting both to hear these women's insights about their own career paths and offer members a chance to discuss professional challenges and potential strategies for success.

This summer, the chapter organized events that highlighted seven women in a broad array of areas within the field of transportation, including Jeevanjot, Singh, Principal Engineer in Transportation Systems Management at NJDOT; Beth DeAngelo, Deputy Area Manager of New York, WSP; Lois Goldman, Director of Regional Planning, NJTPA; Loriann Hoffman, Vice President of Talent and Organization Development, NYCT; Vivian Baker, Director of Intermodal and Interagency, NJT; and Clarelle DeGraffe, Deputy Director of PATH, PANYNJ.

With dynamic, thoughtful speakers and engaged audiences, the events once again were very rewarding for all of those who participated.  Wisdom and insights from years of experience was shared and hard questions asked, with just the right dose of humor mixed in.  Hearing each of the women honestly share the story of her particular career path and the ups and downs along the way in itself was both illuminating and rewarding, and prompted thoughtful and animated conversation.

Reflections and recommendations ranged from how to handle the balance of work and family; the value of stretching yourself beyond your comfort zone; the importance of pursuing what you enjoy; the challenges of speaking up in a male-dominated field; and strategies for distinguishing yourself as a motivated and effective employee. One member remarked on how refreshing it was to hear these leaders and the humility and candor with which all of them approached their sessions.  Many congratulations and thanks to the participants and the organizers for once again creating such a worthwhile program!

Glass Ceiling Committee Survey:

The Glass Ceiling Committee is pursuing research and development of a study to benchmark transportation industry women's leadership roles in the New York metropolitan area. The study also will identify whether the glass ceiling is a barrier to their growth and success.  The results of this study will identify potential policies and/or programs to support the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in the field.  Part of the committee's work involves surveying companies, both public and private.

Your help in promoting the survey is very much needed and appreciated. For the survey to get to the right HR professional, we need your help in identifying the HR representative at your place of employment. Please forward his/her contact information (email, phone, and address) to the address below.

For any additional questions or to express your interest in being part of this ground-breaking effort, you also can contact me at the email below.

WTS members work to make a difference in the lives of high school girls in Newark, NJ, by offering site tours, professional development and group activities that will spark their interest in all modes of transportation. We also seek to encourage them to take courses in math, science, and technology, which are the stepping stones to exciting careers that can change the face of the transportation industry.

Transportation YOU, NYC Transit STEM Intern Program

The NYC Transit Human Resources S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) intern program completed another successful year with this year's interns giving final presentations on their respective projects.
The 15 interns' presentations summarized their areas of assignment at NYC Transit, highlighting their accomplishments in the S.T.E.M internship program. Each intern is paired with a mentor who helped to foster the student's development and growth during the internship. The students interned in departments including Subways, Buses, Supply Logistics and Capital Program Management.
At the presentation ceremony held Aug. 18 at 2 Broadway, students reflected on their time at the MTA. Many believed it helped them to grow and mature professionally.

'A Wonderful Opportunity'

A Capital Program Management S.T.E.M. intern and New York City College of Technology student, Rinelle Alleyne has been with the program since 2015. She wants to become a civil engineer and without this program she wouldn't have had to opportunity to discover what civil engineers do on a day-to-day basis.
"I love this program, I keep coming back here for a reason. It's a wonderful opportunity," Alleyne said. "I've taken away a lot of information about my field and what it really takes to become a civil engineer. It has made me more interested."
Tanet Fleming has spent the year interning with Operations Training, learning all there is to know about operating a subway train and the technicalities associated with the position.
"This year I took on the role of being a train operator. I learned about switches, signals, and operated the train simulator. I understand all the different signals and signs now," Fleming said. "This internship, however, has taught me that the MTA has more to offer than buses and trains. There are many fields here. I can be many things here. It opened my eyes up to the many opportunities here."
The managers who stepped up to mentor these interns were also honored with certificates of recognition by S.T.E.M. coordinators Cherise Myers and Debbie Hyman for their roles in the success of the program. NYC Transit has partnered on this endeavor with City Polytechnic High School, where every 2017 S.T.E.M intern is a student, and many have continued their internship journeys through an extended partnership with CUNY New York City College of Technology.
Judie Hartmann-Cherenfant, principal of City Polytechnic High School, thanked NYC Transit for their role in developing the young minds of her school.
"It's wonderful to see students shine and it's amazing when they have an opportunity to showcase their talents," she said. "Through the actions of our students, they are showing that they are gifted, capable and that we should continue to believe in them. Thank you all for taking the chance and spending the time with our young people."
