Stewardship

"As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another,
as good stewards of God's varied grace."
Peter 4:10

As we come together during the month of October to celebrate the blessings of our faith and our church, the Stewardship Campaign reminds us that everything we have and everything we are and will be comes from God. While the Stewardship Campaign is often associated with financial pledges - and that is an important part - it is also a time when we reflect on our stewardship of the gifts given to us by God. Are we being good caretakers and using our gifts wisely? Are we sharing generously? Are we confirming the love of Christ in our lives?

This October we will focus on the many ways that Our Hands Are Christ's Hands, through the prayers we lift up, our presence in worship and in fellowship with one another, the gifts we give, the loving service we offer to our church and our community, and as witness to the love and joy of being a part of Christ's church. Your financial pledges and service commitments that are requested as part of the Stewardship Campaign are essential to support our operating budget and all the ministries of Maple Grove. Our financial goal for 2018 is a 6% increase in pledged giving so that we can expand our youth programs and support other critical needs to ensure that Maple Grove continues to be an inviting, growing and transforming church community.

You should receive your Every Member in Ministry booklet and EMIM commitment card, including the financial pledge card, by early October. If you do not receive them, please stop by or call the church office. Please prayerfully consider how you are being called to love and serve in 2018.
We are excited about the opportunity to worship together in October and to joyfully commit to supporting Maple Grove in 2018 and beyond with our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. All the ministries of Maple Grove are made possible by your faithful and generous giving - thank you for all that you do!

A Message from Pastor Glenn:

I encourage you to give your financial support to adding a part-time Youth Minister to Maple Grove's staff.  Along with her other work, for over five years Cathy Davis has led our youth ministry.  During that time it has grown in numbers and vitality. Cathy has developed a group of skilled and dedicated young adult volunteers. The effectiveness of the TMI group in reaching 4th-6th graders means that the Youth Group has new 7th graders entering each fall. Youth ministry is strong, spiritual and growing at Maple Grove! Now it's time for Cathy to rededicate her gifts and energy to other needs of the church--pastoral care, Every Member in Ministry, and social justice.  And it's time to find a part-time person to lead our youth ministries in new ways and to new levels. This new staff position can only happen, however, if we have increased funding to support it. Carolyn and I will increase our own giving in order to help make this a reality.  As you are able, I hope that you will do so too.  Our youth are, and will be for years to come, the hands of Christ.

SUNDAY SCHOOL
PROJECT SUNDAY SCHOOL MEETS FROM 9:45 - 10:45 Sunday mornings
BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 10.
Kids ages 4 - 6th grade are welcome to join us in the upper education wing!
Sunday school at Maple Grove is unlike Sunday school anywhere else.  We will have periods of traditional curriculum with a craft or activity related to a bible story.   And sometimes we will embark on a project-based period where kids will read a bible story or a scripture and then put together a performance for the congregation.  These performances are like mini-musicals with a live band, kids singing songs they've heard on the radio among props they've created and a feeling that kids can tell us best what we need to know about God.   This year's first project will begin right away.  The performance will be in worship on October 29.

T.M.I. (Tween Ministry Incorporated)
T.M.I. is a ministry for kids in grades 4-6.
Together we share God's word,
complete mission activities and have fellowship together.

Bring a snack or drink to share, finish up our project, have pizza together and play Capture the Flag!

CHILDREN'S WORSHIP is held during the second worship service each Sunday except the first Sunday of the month.  Children begin in the congregation with their parents and head into Children's worship half way through.  There they enjoy their own version of the worship service, with books, videos, music and games that tie in developmentally appropriate and meaningful way.  Kids are picked up in the chapel at the end of worship.

Stephen Ministry: Transitions and Changes

Life involves a series of frequent changes. Some are welcomed; others uninvited and unwanted. Even positive changes can be difficult and letting go of the familiar can be uncomfortable.  Change indicates something different in our situation and environment. We have always, and will always continue to experience changes.  Transition however, refers to our psychological response to change.  As we transition we undergo a process of inner-reorientation and meaning-redefinition to incorporate change.

Transition researchers from the University of Kentucky, state that "When we refuse to accept a transition, when the fear of what lies ahead prevents us from moving forward, we appear to stand still on life's busy road while life speeds past."  And as we "refuse to accept a transition" our stress and anxiety builds.  Recognizing, acknowledging and processing change in our lives enables us to begin to move faithfully and freely through change.

Stephen Ministers are trained to listen reflectively and confidentially to their care receivers and a dedicated listener enables us to process change.  Maple Grove is a Stephen Ministry congregation and if you would like to receive the skilled care of a Stephen Minister please contact one of our Stephen Leaders: Nancy Gay at 614-267-6418, Jane Rantz at 614-203-9869 or Cathy Davis at 614-263-0195 .

I am convinced and sure of this very thing, that He Who began a good work in you will continue and bringing it to full completion in you.

Clothes for Colerain
Donations Accepted Sunday, October 22 & 29
Maple Grove Lobby between services

This year, thanks to the generosity of our congregation during our Back to School supply drive, Maple Grove was able to provide Colerain Elementary School with new socks and underwear for their staff to have on hand for needed changes during the school day.  Because Colerain has a significant medically fragile population, these school supplies are important!

Colerian still has needs for socks and underwear and elastic waist pants and shorts in sizes 5 - 16 for both boys and girls. The socks and underwear must be new, but the pants and shorts can be clean and gently used. IF YOU CAN MAKE A DONATION OF ANY OF THESE ITEMS, WE WILL ACCEPT THEM IN THE LOBBY ON OCTOBER 22 AND 29. Please contact Dawn if you have any questions about what items are needed. Please do not donate used socks and underwear, or items other than those identified above.
Disaster Relief Supplies

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your generous response to the request for cleaning supplies and other disaster relief efforts. With your help, Maple Grove has supplied 6 complete flood buckets and, in partnership with other churches in the Capital North District, provided dish soap and household cleaner for another 200 buckets! Please continue to pray for all those affected by the storms, floods and wildfires. Truly, your hands are Christ's hands.

West Ohio Steps Up with Flood Bucket Response

Early this week, a semi truck carrying 1,863 flood buckets left Northridge UMC in Springfield, OH on its way to the Midwest Mission Distribution Center in Chatham, IL, which will distribute these cleaning kits to families and individuals in need in places like Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. An additional 171 flood buckets, along with numerous hygiene and school kits, will be delivered later this week. Thank you, West Ohio, for your incredibly generous response to the recent disasters in the southern U.S.! A second phase of flood bucket collections will be held in the coming weeks to be compiled at Rolling Plains UMC in Zanesville and shipped to the Eastbrook Mission Barn in New Castle, PA. More information will be made available on collection points soon!

Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction
Saturday, February 10, 2018
Fellowship Hall

This annual event raises money for the Grounds Committee which is referred to as God's Gardeners. New plants, mulch, and ongoing upkeep of trees and shrubs are all a part of the committee's tasks. This fall the gazebo is scheduled to be painted and bushes that were lost to be replaced.  Please plan to contribute an item or items for the auction. This is an important fund raiser that benefits the entire church. We are asking EMIM groups to create a theme container or just purchase a gift certificate or two. Need an example? Last year we had coffee and tea baskets, Italian night, Gardening, theater tickets, and chocolate. Think of things that you would like to have and then create it! This is a fun important evening that funds a beautiful area of our church.
