The Skokie Home Scoop  - September 29, 2017

 Dear Skokie Families,

This last week was an eventful one at The Skokie School with a visit from Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and our first community meeting hosted by DLR Group as we conclude phase one of Future Ready D36 (Educational Master Facilities Planning).  If you follow Skokie on Twitter, you will have seen pictures from both events.  Our students impressed the Congresswoman with the types of questions they asked and their interest in her experience.  Students left with the message that their voice and values matter, and that sometimes all it takes is a letter or email sent to the right person to gain attention on an issue you feel is deserving.  Our motto, "Skokie Serves," continues to motivate us as a school community, and we are always excited to offer our students learning experiences that expand their understanding of service beyond that of charitable giving.

We were pleased with the turn-out of interested teachers, parents and community members at Monday evening's community presentation hosted by DLR Group.  This was the first opportunity to hear from DLR on environmental data collected in the school, as well as it was a chance to ask questions, voice concerns and share big ideas for the future of our schools.  Skokie will host another event on Tuesday, October 24 at 7pm.  This "Global Perspectives" event will allow for an opportunity to ideate and dream about educational facilities that both honor our past and plan for our future.  Please mark your calendar for this date and plan to join us.  Your voice and investment of time is incredibly important in guiding this process.   CLICK HERE to access the district's webpage devoted to our Future Ready D36 process.

Finally, October is Bullying Prevention Month.  We are remaining committed to a school-wide theme of "Choose Kind," as inspired by the book, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio.  This two word phrase carries with it a tremendous amount of power and impact, and is one we seek to instill in all of our students.   Our  District's Bullying Prevention Plan commits to notifying students (and parents) of how to report, where to report, and gives definitions of what bullying is and isn't.  It also indicates that there is a process for following up on any reports made. Students discuss the difference between mean, rude and bullying behavior in advisories this month , as well as the resources available to them in the school to report bullying and/or seek out support.  While we work to develop supportive and trusting relationships with our students in order to best help them navigate difficult situations, we also provide students with an opportunity to anonymously report unkind behavior using a reporting form that is accessible online as well as in hard-copy form in the office.  These reports are then followed up with a response from myself or Mrs. Woodring, our Assistant Principal. CLICK HERE to view the bullying reporting form.

Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend, and the time together with your families. when we return on Monday it will officially be October!

Most Sincerely,
Kelly Tess
Principal
