Kardel's 30th Anniversary Celebration

On the evening of September 21st we got together to celebrate Kardel's 30th anniversary at the Sea Cider Farm and Ciderhouse in Saanichton.  The weather was perfect, the food was great, and the music inspired lots of dancing!  The evening allowed former staff to come together with current staff to celebrate Kardel's contribution in ensuring the people we support live their lives to the fullest in the way that they choose.

Thank you to Mike for his DJ expertise in providing the music, to the organizing committee for all their hard work, and to everyone who joined in the celebration.  Many thanks to Karl and Jennifer for the wonderful party, but most of all for creating a company that we all love being a part of!

Home Share News

Annual PCPs at our home are a day long marathon with a break in the middle for a healthy lunch. Pat, our Kardel Home Share Coordinator takes us all on, in one setting, to hear our news, learn what activities we've been up to, and to set meaningful, measurable goals for the coming year.  This year Brittany, Kerry Anne, and Jocelyn will be reporting directly back to Pat monthly on the status of their goals... another step forward for them on the road to their independence, and one in which, I hope, will motivate them to actively work towards achieving them within the year.

Ever kind and patient, this session which could seem long, actually works well towards furthering the relationship Pat has with the ladies I support and with me.

DABC Community Update: Annual Earnings Exemption for Provincial Disability Benefits Increased

Effective October 1, 2017, the Annual Earnings Exemption (AEE) limit will increase by $2,400 for each person receiving Persons with Disabilities (PWD) benefits. This earnings exemption allows people receiving PWD benefits to make money from employment over the calendar year without a reduction of their benefits. The AEE does not apply to money received from most other sources such as Canada Pension Plan benefits or Old Age Security benefits. The new AEE limits will be:
  1. Single person with a disability: $12,000
  2. Couple, one person with a disability: $14,400
  3. Couple, both people with a disability: $24,000
The increase in the AEE rate means that some people who previously exceeded their AEE limit earlier in 2017 may be eligible for a top-up of benefits. They are encouraged to contact the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction for further information.
Disability Alliance BC applauds these changes and the leadership taken by the Hon. Shane Simpson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction in recognizing the social and economic value of supporting people with disabilities in the workforce.
