Shabbat Shalom D'var Torah
By Yona Kimche, Upper School Judaic Studies Teacher
A short idea for the upcoming Yom Kippur.

On the eve of the most solemn day in the Jewish Calendar, Yom Kippur, it is traditional to ask forgiveness from our friends and acquaintances, for anything we may have done to upset or hurt them. This tradition has its roots in a remarkable statement of Rambam, Maimonedes, who tells us that for offences committed against our fellow man, forgiveness from G-d is not granted until we have been forgiven by the victim of our actions.

So much for the one who is asking for forgiveness. But what about the recipient of such a request? Need one forgive if asked? The Gemara in Masechet Shabbat makes an amazing statement: “G-d follows our lead when it comes to forgiveness. If we are willing to forgive our fellow, then He in turn will forgive us.” This tells us that, to a large degree, Teshuva is in our own hands . If we are willing to demonstrate a forgiving nature, then so too will G-d be more forgiving towards us.

So if on Friday of this week you are on the receiving end of a request for forgiveness, try forgiving. You may find serious spiritual benefit as well as a repaired friendship.

We should all have a meaningful and uplifting Yom Kippur.
