PAULA MACEDO, NEW GENERAL MANAGER, TAKES THE HELM
Craig Downs retires after 36 years

This month we say goodbye to our longtime General Manager Craig Downs who retired after 36 years and say hello to our new General Manager Paula Macedo, DVM, Ph.D.

Macedo comes to the District with impressive credentials.

She hails from the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District where she served as that District's laboratory director for 11 years. Her surveillance program is internationally recognized and considered the most comprehensive program of its kind in the United States.

Prior to SYMVCD, she served as a research scientist at Montana State University where she worked on human health risk assessments  connected to pesticides used in mosquito control, as well as vector-borne diseases such as West Nile virus, Malaria, Dengue, Rift Valley Fever, and Plague.

Preceding her time in Montana, Macedo received a Ph.D. in entomology from the University of Nebraska.

A native of Brazil, Macedo began her professional career as Veterinarian after receiving her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Universidade Federal De Vicosa in Brazil. In 1999, she shifted her career into entomology and moved with her family to the United States.

We are thrilled that Paula found her way to our District.

Please join us in welcoming her to the Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District.

This edition of Mosquito Bytes Newsletter will forever be known as the 'bittersweet' edition as we bid farewell to former General Manager Craig Downs and say hello to the new General Manager Paula Macedo.

In any case, the District is poised to continue the important mosquito and vector control work that has so long been part of the Contra Costa County experience--90 years to be exact. I don't mean to harp on about this, but it's kind of a big deal. We've been protecting public health for nearly a century!

In celebration, check out our #90Facts90Days Twitter campaign where, for 90 days, we have presented facts about our District or about vectors and their associated diseases. It's a fascinating subject made special by our anniversary milestone.

We are honored to have served generations of families and we are honored to serve you.

Enthusiastically,
