A YOM TOV MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

One gift that Jewish tradition has given to the world is the daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal, and annual review.  Yes, our tradition teaches us from an early age that we need to constantly evaluate, our selves, our families, our communities, and our world.  The High Holy Days uniquely provide us with an ability to do a life review and to institute change. You and I have likely been provided with this message every year since we were intellectual capable of understanding such things.  But, as much as we are provided with these strategies for improvement and evolution, in truth, we don't take full advantage of them.

Let us commit to review the following messages and questions I raised during my talks this High Holy Day Season and use them to continue to work on who we are and to positively seek to improve the world in which we live:

1)     How do you act if you think no one is watching?  If the cameras are "off" will you still act kindly? Will you be compassionate?  Will you heed the Torah's exhortation to "Love your neighbor as yourself?"
2)     When you are in conversation with someone are you truly capable of listening to what that person is saying to you?  Our tradition asks us to hear, listen, and try to understand others.  To be clear,  we are not required to agree, but  the Torah and our rabbinic tradition both suggest that we must listen.
3)     When you look at a person are you really opening your eyes to that person's humanity?  When you look, or review, a situation, are you opening your eyes to the complete picture?
4)     Have you heard your soul speaking to you? And, if so, have you done anything to sooth it?
5)     Inasmuch as this time of year is about life review, and the hope for a good year to come, with an undercurrent of "life-being-n-the-balance", have you given serious thought to whether your loved ones know what you stand for?  Have you expressed your ideas and dreams in a cogent way to those who matter to you?

As always, I welcome thoughts and discussion on the issues raised in this short essay and  on any issue you might wish to raise.

Don't forget to keep supporting Israel, our Jewish homeland, in any way you can and join us for our JCC of LBI trip to Israel in October 2018!!!!

My hope and prayer is that this New Year of 5778 will be one in which each of  us grows in compassion, empathy, and understanding of both our selves and others.

Gemar Chatimah Tovah - May we each be blessed with a year of health, joy, peace, and fulfillment - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

THE WEEK THAT WAS...

The sun shined on the beautiful Rosh Hashanah services last week led by Rabbi Jay and Cantor Green. All went very smoothly until Tashlich when the Spray Beach Yacht Club was surrounded by water.  A bunch of hardy congregants made their way to the ocean to throw their sins in the water.

Thank you to our Gabbaim Harold Farin and Stan Berman, our torah readers Mark Rosenthal and Aaron Lombardi and our Haftorah chanters Ira Morgenthal and Don Pripstein.

Yasher Koah to all those who had honors and to the High Holiday Committee Carole Nunberg, Harold Farin, Paula Hait and Kem Spencer for doing a great job taking care of all the details.  Thank you to Harold Farin, Kem Spencer and Stuart Pepose for doing a great job as ushers.

Thank you to Jody Brusilow who donated a flower arrangement to honor Jay Friedland, Justin, Genevieve, and Thatcher and to Myron Hirsch who donated our other flower arrangement in memory of his wife, Elaine.

Kudos to Sisterhood for providing the traditional challah, apples and honey the first night. Our sweet treat was sponsored by Myron Hirsch in honor of his birthday with wishes for a sweet year to all & Rochelle Spencer in memory of her mother, Katie Shrensel, with wishes for a sweet year to all.

Philippe, a Hollywood cult-horror movie director and popartist,  adopts a Film Noir persona to tell his family's story. He also packs his paints and easel, as he embarks on a journey to create an audacious  omic book about his parents, their survival, and the Holocaust. MORRIS L. SHAPIRO ENDOWMENT FUND
All organizations should have a substantial endowment fund to ensure its continuation. Except for dire emergencies, the principal amounts in the fund cannot be used to run the organization. Interest earned from the account may be used. As previously announced, Herb and Selma Shapiro have created a JCC  Endowment Fund to honor Herb's father. It will be known as  "The Morris L. Shapiro Endowment Fund at the JCC of LBI " The Shapiros have generously pledged a total of $50,000 to fund this. While initially established by the Shapiros, anyone may contribute to this important fund.

Join Herb and Selma in helping assure the continuity of our JCC, and our ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this Fund.
