TIP Strategies Presenting at IEDC Toronto

The 2017 IEDC Annual Conference in Toronto is a busy time for TIP Strategies. Our team members will be leading two concurrent sessions on Sunday, September 17.

TIP’s managing director, Jon Roberts, will be hosting a session with Anatalio Ubalde, co-founder and managing director of GIS Planning. The session, “A Disrupted Economy: Is Your Community Ready for Tech Disruptions?,” will address the current challenges and future changes occurring in the economic landscape as a result of technological innovation. Jon and Anatalio will also touch on ways economic development professionals can respond.

Jon’s session will face off with several others, including a panel discussion moderated by TIP senior partner, Jeff Marcell, entitled “Don’t Go: What to Do When Your Start-Ups are Poached.” Panel members will look at entrepreneurial cities that have lost successful start-ups, the lessons they've learned, and what economic professionals can do to retain entrepreneurs in their communities.

If you’re in attendance, we hope to see you at one of our sessions!

South Carolina I-77 Alliance Releases Talent Profiles
The South Carolina I-77 Alliance recently released TIP's in-depth profile of talent and workforce availability for the region, which extends from the Charlotte metro area down to Columbia, SC. The report provides insights into the regional talent base as well as workforce profiles for each of the region’s four counties. The Alliance uses these tools as part of their business recruitment strategy to demonstrate the availability of skilled labor in the region. The completed profiles can be viewed on the Alliance’s site.

Savannah River Site, Preparing for a Transitioning Workforce
TIP was honored to share the stage with University of South Carolina–-Aiken Chancellor, Dr. Sandra Jordan, at the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce's 11th annual State of Our Community luncheon. Tom Stellman presented the findings from TIP’s recently concluded Economic Impact and Consequences Analysis. The study quantified the economic impact of the US Department of Energy's Savannah River Site and examined the regional implications of the retirement of 3,000 Site workers and the associated influx of new workers. A recap of the event was published by the Aiken Standard. The full study is also available online.

Fort Campbell Region Receives Implementation Funding Grant

The Pennyrile Area Development District (PADD) was recently awarded a $1.7 million grant from the Department of Defense’s Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) to implement two key economic development initiatives identified in a recent planning effort facilitated by TIP. Published in December 2016, the Fort Campbell Strong Economic Growth Plan is a long-term economic diversification and growth plan for a six-county region in Kentucky and Tennessee that surrounds Fort Campbell. The plan seeks to leverage the economic asset that Fort Campbell and its personnel represent, while also reducing the region’s economic reliance on the Post.

OEA funding will support expanding advanced manufacturing education and training in the region. A greater emphasis on training for advanced manufacturing is especially important in light of LG’s plans to build a one-million-square-foot home appliance manufacturing facility in the region. The OEA funding will also help establish Fort Campbell Strong as a regional defense alliance.

29 Ideas to Activate Empty Spaces in Your Community
Do you have empty spaces in your community? Does your downtown have areas that are underutilized, like alleys or open lots? Does your city have vacant buildings or inactive districts that could be put to better use? Those were the questions tackled during a panel session at the 2017 IEDC Leadership Summit in Jacksonville that included John Karras, creator of urbanSCALE.com and senior consultant with TIP. In response to the robust discussion during the panel, John wrote a follow-up article, “ 29 Ideas to Activate Empty Spaces in Your Community.” The article features five categories of strategies, ranging from the most ambitious—redeveloping an entire district through major investments like Tony Hsieh’s Downtown Project in Las Vegas—to the least intensive initiatives—turning a single on-street parking spot into a temporary public space through events like PARK(ing) Day.
