| Paying Attention to the Elephant in the Room: Recommitting to Christian Formation |

My friend, a retired Lutheran pastor, confessed in a sermon that he was a believer on Sunday, but by Thursday nearly an atheist.
Yes, he was overstating the case - maybe. But he was also telling it like it is. Our society, which for generations offered at least tacit support and even approval of faith - and particularly Protestant Christian faith - has now withdrawn it. No, we are not being persecuted. There is no "war on Christmas." Nevertheless, the general public finds itself somewhere between indifference and suspicion when it comes to faith of any kind, including Christianity. Members of churches are not exempt, either. Reasons for this are many, including recoiling from aggressive and triumphalist forms of fundamentalism (Christian and otherwise); headline stories about clergy sexual abuse; distrust of institutions; and widespread misconceptions of who we are and what we are about.
The elephant in the room is this: Our culture challenges faith every day, sometimes directly, more often indirectly. Most follow the lead of the dominant culture either all the time or some of the time. Faith unsupported can easily fade, and we end up running on fumes. No one is exempt from this relentless challenge, including the person in the pulpit.

The congregation of Salem Church at Pinegrove, 312 Combs Ferry Road, Winchester, will observe its 230th anniversary and Homecoming on Sunday, October 1.

ll who have been part of the Salem Church family and ministry are invited to share in the celebration. Worship will begin at 11:00, and a covered dish dinner will follow.

| Living Water for the World Update |
Dear Living Waters for the World Community,
Last week started off with another major hurricane (Maria) impacting the Caribbean and another major earthquake rocking Mexico. Living Waters for the World (LWW) has confirmed, with our in-country teams, that all active water systems are functional in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Southern Mexico. As people begin to put their lives back together amidst the devastated landscape and infrastructure, our partners report that their LWW systems are making a difference in the lives of many people.
We have received reports of systems in Haiti and Cuba providing water to people before Hurricane Irma struck; pastors opening their doors to make their churches sanctuaries to people displaced by mandatory evacuation orders as well as flooding; and of systems freely distributing safe, clean water to people in the aftermath of the hurricane.
While LWW does not foresee issuing an appeal to rebuild any water systems due to Hurricane Irma or the earthquakes in Mexico, if you would like to make a contribution to support LWW's in-country networks, such gifts help support our partner communities in times of disaster as well as every day life.
We thank you for your prayers and concern and ask you to continue lifting up in prayer all those who were affected by these recent natural disasters in the Caribbean, Mexico and the United States.

Affirmaiton of Creation Action
|
In accordance with the action taken at the 222
nd
General Assembly (2016) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and upon the instruction of the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly, the Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, II, the assembly's action on the Affirmation of Creation is being distributed electronically to all presbyteries and synods of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Further, we ask presbyteries to forward this action to sessions so that all councils of the church, per action of the assembly, can use it for their study, reflection, and, where possible, their approval.

| 130th Anniversary- First Presbyterian Church, Harlan |
Founded in October of 1887, the First Presbyterian Church located on 306 W Clover Street Harlan, Kentucky, invites you to be a part of our 130th Anniversary.
On October 15, 2017 at 10:45am, our church will celebrate this ministry milestone achievement during this Sunday morning worship service. A fully catered meal will be provided for all following this service in the church fellowship hall.
