Dear Neighbour:

Following a rather cool summer, we were hit by an unexpected heat wave these past few weeks.  The city kept our splash pads open and I know they were well used.

I did get a complaint about the air conditioning being off in an apartment building and working with the management, we were able to get it back on.  This showed there is some confusion about the intent of the Heat Bylaw.  I raised this issue at Council and Council supported my motion to have staff revisit the bylaw to provide more clarity.  We did a full review 2 years ago also at my request and made no changes but further clarity would help.

September has been a busy month with Council meetings and committees starting backup.  I am starting interviews for the citizen members of the newly reinstated Road Safety Committee and I look forward to having this up and running by year end.

Next month, I hope you join me at  my Budget Town Hall on October 23, 2017 .  This will be your opportunity to get some information on both the City and Region of Peel budget process and find out where your dollars are spent and what drives the budget.  I am pleased that Mayor Crombie will be joining me and I am planning to live stream the meeting on Facebook so that everyone can be involved.

We have just received an application for intensification at Battleford and Glen Erin Drive.  Please watch my newsletters and website for information on a public meeting that I am planning for November on this issue.

All of this information is on the Ward 9 website, which I have recently had redesigned so please check there often at ward9.ca.

In the event that you are unable to view this e-newsletter please note that there is always a link on the front page of my website.

As always, my staff and I are here to help you with any City or Regional issues.  Just send me an email to  [email protected] or call  905-896-5900 and check the Ward 9 website at  ward9.ca for ongoing updates.

Reimagining Meadowvale Town Centre - Walkability Audit

An exciting project that we are undertaking this year is Reimagining the Mall.  City staff are looking at specific malls to determine how they could and should be redesigned for the future.  Two of Ward 9's malls are included - Meadowvale Town Centre and Erin Mills Town Centre.

The first project involves Meadowvale Town Centre which was the focus of a review by planning students at the University of Waterloo earlier this year.   The first phase of the project is starting on October 2 when Peel Health staff will conduct a Walkability Audit of the MTC.  Click here to learn more about this project.

Everyone is invited to join us on Monday October 2, 2017 at the Meadowvale Community Centre, 6655 Glen Erin Drive in the Upper Lobby starting at 9:30 am for registration which will be followed by a brief presentation.  The group will then walk into the neighbourhood in and around the mall to note how walkable and accessible it is.

There will then be small group discussions back at the community centre with the session ending by 12:30 pm.   Spots are limited therefore please click here to register.

There will also be another audit for Erin Mills Town Centre on Wednesday October 18, 2017 running from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm in Program Room 2 at the Erin Meadows Community Centre, 2800 Erin Centre Blvd. Again, spots are limited therefore please click here to register.
Ward 9 Budget Town Hall

Please join me on Monday October 23 for my Ward 9 Budget Town Hall at the Meadowvale Community Centre, 6655 Glen Erin Drive from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

I am holding this meeting to provide an opportunity for Ward 9 residents to learn more about both the City of Mississauga and Region of Peel budgets.    I am pleased that Mayor Crombie will also be attending and we are both looking forward to meeting and hearing from you.

Staff will be making short presentations on the budgets and there will be ample time for discussion, questions and comments.  I am working on having the entire meeting live streamed on my Ward 9 Facebook Page so that you can send us your questions in real time and have them answered at the meeting.

Peel Police - New "Grandparent Scam" Targets Seniors

The Peel Regional Police Fraud Bureau are advising residents of a new type of "Grandparent Scam" targeting seniors. The scam involves a phone call being made to the victim, by an individual claiming to be a family member, usually a grandson. The victim is asked to purchase expensive 'Rolex' watches. The victim is advised that the watches are needed to pay back an outstanding debt, and in some instances, needed as a gift. The victim is directed to send the watch to an address, usually in Quebec, through a courier service. They impress upon the victim that they do not want any other family members to know.
Peel Regional Police would like to remind residents that in the event they receive a call similar to this, they should verify the details of the request through another family member.  Any requests for money by unverified parties on the phone should be treated suspiciously.
Here are some other tips to remember:
  • If someone calls claiming to be a lawyer/attorney or police officer, they will not ask you for money/jewelry over the phone.
  • Residents with elderly family members who live alone, or have published phone numbers, should make them aware of this.
  • Residents, in general, should be cognizant of the fact that there are many fraudulent schemes out there, using the internet and phone calls to contact potential victims.  Requests for money should be treated with caution and an appropriate amount of due diligence should be practiced.
  • Education is the key to prevention with this type of scam. To learn more about this scam, and other scams affecting Canadians, residents are encouraged to visit www.antifraudcentre.ca
  • Peel Regional Police also offer some more Safety for Seniors links which can be accessed here.

Anyone who has any information regarding this fraud is urged to contact the Fraud Bureau at (905) 453-2121, ext. 3335. Anonymous tips can also be left by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or by visiting www.peelcrimestoppers.ca

Boxes and Banners Project Reveal

You may have noticed the painted / wrapped utility boxes around the city lately.  This is a fun project the Mississauga Arts Council is spearheading and gets local artists to create art on the utility boxes with themes relating to the neighborhoods that they're in.

I was pleased to reveal the newly painted utility box in Ward 9 on Sunday September 24, 2017 at the north side of Derry Rd. W, just east of Glen Erin at the edge of Glen Eden Park.   Click here to see a video as I talk about the history of the images which have been painted onto the utility box.
Food Drive for Eden Food for Change

On September 23, I had the pleasure of partnering with the Meadowvale Residents' Association (MRA) and the Metro store at the Meadowvale Town Centre for a fresh food drive.  We collected  911 lbs fresh food, 182 lbs of non perishable food and $539 cash!  This is a huge contribution to the Eden Food for Change and will help feed many families.

I want to t hank all the amazing volunteers of all ages, Metro Meadowvale store manager Robert and his staff, our Peel Police officers and the many residents who bought fresh food products for the food bank. A very special thanks to the Meadowvale Residents Association for partnering again with me for the food drive

Click here to watch a short video of me and MRA members Bev Klatt and Liz Christison as we chat about the importance of donating to Eden Food for Change.

I was pleased to be the venue sponsor again and join Mike Kibsey at the Meadowvale Community Centre on September 16th to kick off the annual Terry Fox Run.   The Terry Fox Run is an annual  event held around the world in commemoration of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope and to raise money for cancer research.
Edenwood Seniors' Village 25th Anniversary

I had a lovely time at the 25th anniversary of Edenwood Seniors Village.  This is a very special place in our community providing quality living for our seniors.  I always enjoy my visits there and this time it was such an honour to present a certificate of recognition to the residents and staff.  I noted in my remarks that the quilting bee worked on the beautiful quilt which hangs in the Meadowvale Community Centre  commemorating the 40th anniversary of Meadowvale.

Mathnasium Grand Opening

I was delighted to cut the ribbon on September 16th at the grand opening of Mathnasium,  an after-school Math learning centre located at the Meadowvale Town Centre . Mathnasium focuses on assisting students with the foundation gaps in their math knowledge so that they can catch up and get ahead!  They are a welcome addition to our great Ward 9 business community.
Councillors Cook at Eden Food for Change

I enjoyed spending an afternoon with some of my Council colleagues in the learning kitchen at Eden Food for Change on September 13th. Under the watchful eye of Chef Peter, we prepared over 200 meals of
Ethiopian style lentils, chicken & root vegetables.  It was a wonderful learning experience made more meaningful knowing that we prepared meals that were given to clients that evening.
Welcoming the Real Estate Institute of Canada  to Mississauga

I was pleased to meet with the Real Estate Institute of Canada Toronto Chapter members on September 12th at the Meadowvale Community Centre. Many thanks to Tahir Qureshi who organized the meeting and invited me to bring greetings.  The group had a tour of the facility and I had the pleasure of giving them a history of the original centre and how we moved ahead on the redevelopment.
City Clerk Crystal Greer Retires

It was bittersweet to attend the retirement celebration of Crystal Greer on September 11.  Crystal is the former Director of Legislative Services and City Clerk with the City of Mississauga, who retired after 32 years of public service.  Crystal was the chief planner 25 years ago for Ward 9 and she was a great help to me when we were building Lisgar and Central Erin Mills. I am sad to see a great colleague leave. She will be missed but I hope she will enjoy retirement.
