A Message From Our Pastor

https://files.constantcontact.com/47a3a3ae001/3a6e2f3e-c3dd-4442-a2f8-ac03178b5342.png

It was 500 years ago on, October 31, 1517 that a little know monk named Martin Luther began what we now call the Reformation of western Christendom . This reform of the Roman Catholic Church and society in general, was needed and welcomed by many. Of course it was also divisive and ultimately led to multiple protestant Christian denominations and even armed conflict. Martin Luther knew little of this when he started these reforms, he led these reforms so that the church would be centered in scripture, faith and grace.

We will join with Christians around the world in recognizing the importance
of the protestant reformation that was begun 500 years ago.
Below is a list of Reformation activities here in the Memphis area.

  • Reformation Music Festival, Monday, Oct. 2, Trinity Lutheran Church, 7:30 pm
  • Memphis Theological Seminary Chapel, Tuesday, Oct. 3, 11:00 am, Pastor Bahlinger guest preacher
  • Reformation Book Store, St. Luke, Sunday, Oct. 1 and 8
  • Beer and Hymns, Thursday, Oct. 12, Meddlesome Brewery, 6-8 pm
  • Reformation 5K Fun Run, Saturday, Oct. 21, 9am Green Line
  • Oktoberfest, St. Luke, Saturday Oct. 21, 6:30pm
  • Community Reformation Service, Sunday, Oct. 29, Church of the Holy Communion, 5:30 pm
  • Reformation Day Service, Tuesday, Oct. 31, St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, 11:30 am, sponsored by Memphis Theological Seminary

As you can see from the list above, this is a full line up of activities. St. Luke is joining with area ELCA congregations, Episcopal congregations and the Memphis Theological Seminary.

For the entire month of October, we will have a Reformation 500 theme during worship at St. Luke. The sermons will focus on God's Word, Holy Baptism, Luther's teaching on the "two kingdoms", vocation in Christian life, and justification.

One of the best ways you can help to celebrate is to invite a friend to participate in one or more of these activities. This is truly a historic time, 500 years and we are still sharing the good news of faith alone, grace alone and word alone.

Join with me in commemorating the birth of our Lutheran understanding of God's abundant grace and love.  Read a biography on Luther, hear the sermons, and attend one of the special services.

Join the celebration,
Pastor Cliff

A Message From Our Council President

October, 2017

Happy Fall Fellow St. Luke Saints!

Well it is officially Fall and although my outdoor thermometer is telling me Summer is hanging on, I know that cooler weather is just around the corner.  My fantasy football team is holding their own and another awesome God's Work Our Hands is in the books!

I cannot tell you how proud I am to call St. Luke my home church.  The volunteers who came out and worked on everything from projects at Asha's Refuge to singing at Grace Healthcare were wonderful.  Your dedication to this wonderful outreach is uplifting.

There was a great deal of work going on in the kitchen from baking cookies for the first responders to making casseroles for those in need.  I enjoyed baking cookies and taking them to the local sheriff's station and fire stations.  This year we went to two new fire stations and the first responders were very happy to see us.  Also, many thanks to those who helped setup, serve and cleanup for the picnic after all the hard work was finished.

The folks at Grace Healthcare enjoyed the melodies our Saints offered.  Our new community room got some much-needed TLC and paint!  Fletcher Creek Park became a lot cleaner when our Saints paid it a visit.  I understand that some folks helped who were not from our congregation!
The ivy cross on the Shady Oaks School side of the building got a beautiful trim and some cleanup was done inside the building as well.  And I cannot forget to mention our younger Saints.  The youth really stepped up and helped in all areas of GWOH Sunday.

I hope you have had a chance to check out our legacy campaign and prayerfully consider your contribution to the future of St. Luke.  Each time I teach Sunday school, watch the kids choir sing or just stand in the Narthex after church and watch the kids running around, talking to their friends, or in my case, my kids standing by the door waiting for me to stop talking to one of you, I think, St. Luke is a great place to raise my family and hopefully my family will raise their family here too.

First Food Sunday is 10/01/2017 so please bring a can or two or box or two to help our food pantry.  Remember, it doesn't have to be Food First Sunday to donate to the pantry.

October is going to be a busy month.
-    We have the 500 Reformation and various happenings associated with it.  You may find those in the newsletter, on St. Luke website or the bulletin board at church.
-    We will be hosting another Family Promise.  Please prayerfully consider volunteering to help make this another successful visit and making these families in transition feel welcomed.
-     Did someone say candy?!  Trunk-r-Treat festivities are happening at the end of the month so clean out your trunks and the back of your cars for those decorations and candy.

Psalm 96: 11-12 " Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fullness thereof.  Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall the trees of the wood rejoice"

Yours in Christ,
Priscilla Hughes

Area Church Holding Community Worship Service to Commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation

Collierville, Tennessee, USA - An ecumenical worship service to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at 5:30 pm at Church of the Holy Communion, located at 4645 Walnut Grove Rd in Memphis.  The worship service is being jointly hosted by Church of the Holy Communion, Epiphany Lutheran Church and other area ELCA congregations including Living Word Lutheran, Peace Lutheran and St. Luke Lutheran, and Kingsway Christian Church.   This is a community-wide worship service open to all - we encourage everyone to wear red, the color symbolizing the Protestant Reformation.
The Protestant Reformation, enflamed by theologian Martin Luther's protests against Church corruption, remains relevant today with its message that Christ's life flows through faith into a life of service to neighbor and community.  At the time of the Protestant Reformation, Luther spread the message to the populace that God is merciful and loving, and that faith is the work of God's Holy Spirit.
This special worship service will consist of a festival liturgy with Holy Communion, procession of church banners, music performed by combined church choirs, and Reformation-era pipe organ music.  Pastors from all the participating churches will take part in the worship service.
The offering at this worship service will be designated to Lutheran Disaster Relief, with 100% going towards hurricane assistance.

ELCA News

Each year, more than 225 ELCA missionaries serve in more than 40 countries around the world. They are sent by the ELCA in response to invitations from our companion churches and serve in a variety of roles, working alongside our companions to proclaim the gospel, raise up leaders, care for those in need and develop new ways of being church together.

This October, as we observe the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, join us for Global Church Sunday by celebrating and supporting our church's missionaries! Consider coordinating your celebration with World Communion Sunday (Oct. 1, 2017) or Reformation Sunday (Oct. 29, 2017). If each of the ELCA's 9,300 congregations made a gift of $500 or more to Missionaries and Young Adults in Global Mission in commemoration of the 500th anniversary, we could raise nearly $5 million for these life-changing ministries. This is a historic milestone for the Lutheran church and an exciting opportunity to participate in the ongoing Reformation. Will you join us?

Habitat for Humanity!
St. Luke participated in the Habitat for Humanity build on Saturday, September 16.  We had 8 volunteers from St. Luke where we installed house wrap, foam insulation and installed windows.  It was a great team building and learning experience by all.

Our last fall Habitat for Humanity build date is Saturday, October 7 from 7:30am - 1pm.  The schedule shows that we will be doing some painting, installing trim and cabinets but it may change pending on where the needs are.   Sign-up is available on-line through our church website (http://www.stlukememphis.org) or there are sign-up sheets available in the narthex.
St. Luke members and friends are invited to help build

The location of the build is near the airport at 3473 Christine Circle, Memphis, TN 38118.  If you have any questions please contact Scott Larson 901-616-4579 or [email protected].

LifeBlood will be at St. Luke on October 1st from 9:00AM - 1:00PM in the CFC. As the service schedule has changed, please note the slightly later start time.

Lifeblood is the Memphis region's only non-profit volunteer blood center, dedicated to meeting the needs of patients, healthcare facilities, medical professionals and the community at large. Every year Lifeblood supplies more than 100,000 units of blood and blood products for local patient transfusion.

Because Memphis is the eighth largest medical center in the United States and hosts the second busiest trauma center in the nation, the need for blood is constant. Unfortunately, over one-third of our blood supply is currently being imported from other volunteer blood centers throughout the country.

The donation process only takes about 1 hour and takes place entirely at St. Luke. Each donation of whole blood can help as many as 3 recipients - all of them our neighbors.
Please sign up prior to October 1st using the LifeBlood portal at clublifeblood.org . You can also complete your health questionnaire prior to October 1st using the portal; this will help ensure fast and efficient donations.

Please contact Jon Klein ( [email protected] , 901-268-5478 ), the St. Luke Lifeblood Coordinator, with any questions. Thanks in advance!

 Grace Healthcare
You are Needed!
If you can sing, we need you!  If you can't sing we
still need you!

You can serve ice cream and cookies  to people who love to see your smile!  You can talk to a lonely person who wants someone to pay them attention. All you need to do is block out  an hour between 2 and 3 every second Monday of the month!   There are sick, injured and some old folks just waiting for you!
St. Luke's Birthday Ministry to the clients at Grace HealthCare has had more attendees at the parties for the last few months. We need a minimum of three servers and two singers to be successful. The best part is we try to talk to the people while we are serving! God has continued to bless this ministry for many years. Please contact Alice Burns if you are interested in helping, or need more information.
Email Alice at [email protected] or catch her on Sunday. Thank you!

And a couple of requests For Musa's family:
Sagess needs a single bed so she can quit sleeping on a mat on the floor...she is only 4 so small is best!  She's now a preK school student ☺ !
Gasirida, who loves books, would appreciate a bookshelf, any size, for her bedroom.  She hopes to help with the Habitat for Humanity build on  Oct 7.

All the girls are doing well and Isaka is trying to talk and is running.  Leya is a freshman at University of Memphis and loves it!  Thomas Summers is her lab teacher for chemistry!

Thank you so much!
In Jesus,
Nancy Lange

St. Luke Lutheran Church and Thrivent,

Thank you all for the time you spent with us painting, building storage shelving and organizing our donations.  The $250 gift from Thrivent to help purchase the shelving and bins is greatly appreciated!  We are so thankful that you made serving a priority in your day and hearts.  You are an example of Christ to the Nations!  Thank you for your continuous support and faithful encouragement.

Dear St. Luke Saints,

The Lord be with you!

We would like to take this opportunity to say once again how grateful we are for each and every one of you. It has been your love and encouragement that has brought us to this point in our lives, and while we are an eleven hour drive away, we are always reminded (especially by this poster) that you are always on our hearts and minds. To quote
Philippians 1:
3 "I thank my God every time I remember you,
constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you,
because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now.
I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.
It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me..."

Thank you for your overwhelming kindness, and we hope to see you all again very soon!

Love in Christ,
David and Erin Potter

With sadness, we hold Nancy Roman in our prayers, with the loss of her husband Ben.
When one suffers, we all suffer as the family of saints.  Our hearts are with you Nancy.  Plans are being finalized for a memorial service on Oct. 28.

Parish Talk - October
God's Work, Our Hands:  Many thanks for all who organized, worked, donated, and cleaned up for this special event.  God's work went out into the community and, really, that's what it's all about, right?  It was a beautiful day, with an outdoor service, and it was fun to see so many happy faces.
Here is a sample of the work, and the fun!

Oh, my gosh, the Garage Sale!  This was a huge effort and did so well, I think we should do it every Saturday.  Are you up for that, Jennifer?  Many thanks for all the folks that donated items and for all the helper bees!
Two more saints! Yippy Skippy!  Didn't you just love the baptism of the Klein twins?  Alexander and Benjamin were their precious selves during the whole ceremony.  Sealed to Christ forever.  Wonderful!!  Many blessings to parents, Sarah and Jon and the sponsors.
Ok, in the "Too Cute For Words" category, let's give the award to the Cherub Choir, with the anthem, "Glorify Thy Name."  What a great job they did under superb leadership.  Many thanks for sharing these gifts with us.
Paul White's wise words:  What's in a name?  Peter said Jesus was the Messiah, then he denies His announcement of His death.  Peter's reaction was certainly human - distressing, but suffering was part of the plan for our salvation.  From suffering comes glory, but being His follower is no easy matter.  Like the disciples, we must take up the cross, for "whoever loses his life will find it."  It is a life of sacrifice, with the challenge of living a life not centered on self but to serve others.  We must stand up against hate by speaking out.  We are created in God's image; we must allow Jesus into our hearts, heads, and bodies.  Proclaim Him and love others.
Cliff Notes:  Pastor Cliff also spoke about the importance of names.  Peter's name was changed from Simon and he was the rock upon which the foundation of the church was based.  It was the birth of a new community, a peaceable kingdom (not made of stone).   As a member in this community of saints, forgiveness is a large part of our lives - family and church. We cannot keep score!  Forgiveness creates relief, joy, gratitude, and freedom.  Remember that our debts are washed clean by God, so must we forgive.  If you think about it, it's really what we want and it will, indeed set you free.

STEWARDSHIP

                                Responding to God's Covenant
The Stewardship Campaign theme for this year will be, "Stewardship: Responding to God's Covenant."   This was inspired by Nehemiah 10:39, "We will not neglect the house of our God."   During the month of November we will all be asked to make a plan to respond to God's Covenant.  The St. Luke community has many members with exceptional God given abilities that God gives to us so we can share with the church and our community.  During the month of November, Stewardship will be showing how we can return to St. Luke a portion of God's good gifts. We hope you will join us as we give thanks to God for all the things God has given to us.  Making a plan to give financially is an important step in our discipleship and spiritual growth. It is by giving, that we learn to trust God for all of our needs. Our Stewardship sermon series will be as follows,
Sunday, November 5 Pastor Cliff Bahlinger
Sunday, November 12 Ken Westphal
Sunday, November 19 Consecration Sunday and Thanksgiving Dinner
Stewardship will also be providing devotionals during the week of Nov 6 th and Nov 13th which will be provided in the Sunday bulletin and emailed to you at home to be read during your time with God.  Stewardship will also be providing a dinner Nov 19th, to give thanks for all that you as members St. Luke have given.
We are looking for volunteers to cook a turkey for the Dinner Nov 19th, please contact Eric McKinney or Ken Westphal if you can help cook a turkey in your home.
Stewardship will provide stuffing and potatoes for the dinner, but we are asking the members to provide (last name begins with):
A-G Sides (other than potatoes and stuffing)
H-N Desserts
O-Z Salads
Thank you for your participation, let us prayerfully consider how we will respond to God's Covenant,
The St. Luke Stewardship Committee

You now have the option to give to St. Luke by scanning our QR code with your Smartphone!
The code will be on the back of the bulletin each Sunday.  Thank you for supp orting the ministries  of
St.
Luke!
