"Make Us Be Bread"
This Sunday
This Sunday is World Communion Sunday, a Sunday when we remember that we are a part of a much larger Body of Christ. Throughout the world Christians are coming together, worshipping, remembering Jesus, and praying, not only for each other but for the world. Those prayers are not simply about other Christians in the world. They are prayers for a multitude of things occurring around the world; those suffering or struggling, those facing major conflicts as a nation or a people, those facing new regimes and fears. We pray and remember those who are hungry, thirsty for clean water, recovering from disasters, or seeking to find a greater voice. We are praying for peace throughout the world. And yes, we are also praying for those who are also praying for us. Similar to what happens as a new year works its way across the globe, Christians worshipping and praying does the same; from Australia, through Japan and Russia and China, Thailand and India, the Middle East and Europe; across the Atlantic to England, Greenland and Northern Canada. Then on through the United States and Canada, Mexico, South and Central America, Alaska and on to Hawaii prayers are offered throughout the day, across the globe, and we are a part of it. This Sunday's worship service will involve children as they gather ingredients to make bread. We will focus on Jesus as the bread of life. We will bring the diverse ingredients together, much like the world coming together on this day of communion and community, and find within the combination the power of new creation. As the season turns to Autumn, I am reminded of Parker Palmer's reflections on Autumn:
"Faced with the inevitable coming of winter, what does nature do in Autumn? It scatters the seeds that will bring new growth in the spring- and scatters them with amazing abandon."
I attended a conference recently and listened to our Bishop talk about living in a tension between two ideas. On the one hand, we know to be true,
"As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end." On the other hand, we also know to be true that God says,
"Behold, I am doing a new thing in you. Do you not see it?"
To me, that tension is autumn. The world is as it has always been, is as it was created, moving toward winter and a time of rest. At the same time, the world is preparing for what new things the Spirit is doing and planning and bringing to life.
I am moved by the observation at Aldersgate this Autumn of the seeds that are being scattered and planted and tended. I am moved by the work of the Spirit among us as we start to imagine what might be in store for us.

October 8th, our church will participate in the Interfaith Crop Walk in the Redmond/Bellevue area. The details of the walk are listed below. More than just a good time walking 3 miles with friends, although having fun is important too, our hope is that we will gain a better understanding of the Crop Walk's purpose.
The conversation of the purpose of the Crop Walk was started with our Club 345 and Youth Group at the end of our time together on September 10th when we did a privilege walk. A privilege walk lets us see and think about where we fit into the range of privileges and hardships that we have within the community we live in. We all started on one line and based on certain statements we took steps forward or backward. Some of the statements were...
- Take a step backward if you are left-handed
- Take a step forward if you have 50+ books in your house
- Take a step forward if you are a male with athletic ability
- Take a step forward if at least one parent graduated college
- Take a step backward if you you're being raised in single parent household
- Take a step forward if you have a gardener, maid, or nanny
- Take a step forward if you went to an overnight summer camp
- Take a step back if you ever felt like you were at risk for being judged based on your race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, or sexual orientation

Memorial Service Saturday

We will celebrate the life of Peter Ting tomorrow on Saturday, September 30 at 11:00am. Peter and his wife Kathy have been members at Aldersgate since 2006. There will be a reception after the memorial service. If you are able to help serve food during the reception, or help with setup or clean up, please sign up or contact Lea Fox, 425-641-6796.

Youth Assistant Pledge
Have you heard them? Do you see them? Our Youth Ministry has grown beyond belief with busy, happy kids (and their parents) filling our halls with their enthusiasm. Youth are regularly participating in Youth Group, worship services, retreats, service projects, dinners, and now Sunday School. Things have grown so much that Jen Hoerber needs a Youth Assistant to help her plan and implement the youth program. Your help is needed to raise $15,000 to support the annual salary of a Youth Assistant.

Green Team ~ New Beginning

The Aldersgate Green Team has begun working again on behalf of God's Creation on projects both local and global. It's Time for the Young at Heart Potluck

Calling all retired folks, empty nesters, and wannabees! Join us Tuesday, October 3 at 6:00pm in Friendship Hall for an enjoyable evening of good food and fellowship. CROP Hunger Walk

Aldersgate participate in the interfaith
CROP Hunger Walk
this year on October 8th. All are invited to join us for this 3 mile walk to raise money and awareness of hunger throughout the world. The walk starts and ends at the Muslim Association of Puget Sound, 17550 NE 67th CT, Redmond, WA 98052. Registration begins at 1:00pm and the walk starts at 1:45pm. All walkers are invited to partake of a light lunch (donations will be accepted to help pay for the food) at Aldersgate at 12:30pm. Please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or send an email to Jen Hoerber or Malia Hampson. More information along with donation collection will be available Sunday mornings on September 24th and October 1st.

Club 345 (3rd~4th~5th Grade)
October 8
Kids in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades meet once a month on Sunday evening for food and a fun activity. The next meeting is October 8. We will meet for lunch after church and then participate in the CROP Hunger Walk.

Rummage Sale
Friday & Saturday, October 13 & 14
It's that time again! This year's Rummage Sale is on Friday, October 13 and Saturday, October 14.
So it is time to clean out the closets (and the garage!) and donate those unused, no longer needed items to the rummage sale.
- Monday October 9 - Set up tables
- Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (October 10, 11, 12) - Donations accepted and priced
- We are not able to accept donations on Friday.
- We can only accept furniture that you are willing to take back if it doesn't sell.
- Please call Linda Detering at 425-867-0441 if you need help getting your donations to church.
- Sign up to help with the rummage sale on Sunday's attendance form.
Thanks to you, our members, neighbors and friends our rummage sales have been very successful with cheerful givers and happy buyers, please help us do it again! Funds from our rummage sale are used to help cover travel expenses of our own church members in mission and youth retreats. Please support us with your prayers, donations, and service

Fall Festival is
October 27th
This fun event has been highly popular with 150+ people in attendance from the church, preschool and community in years past. We will have a hot dog / chili dinner, carnival games and of course our costume parade for all the kids!
If you are can help staff a carnival booth, help in the kitchen, decorate, clean up the night of the event, or be part of the cooking team cooking and preparing food prior to the event, please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact Jen Hoerber.

World Communion Sunday
Sunday, October 1
We will take a special offering on World Communion Sunday, October 1. Your gift matters! Gifts fund graduate racial-ethnic World Communion Scholarships, with at least one-half of the annual amount reserved for ministries beyond the United States. Donations also provide for undergraduate U.S. Ethnic Scholarship and Ethnic In-Service Training programs. The World Communion Sunday offering empowers a diverse mix of national and international ethnic students. Thank you for your generous gift!

Interfaith Build
October 12, 13, 19, 20
It's fall and time for the Habitat for Humanity Interfaith Build. This is your chance to do something about housing the homeless. Habitat is building homes on the Sammamish Plateau and has set aside a block of time for the Interfaith Community. The dates are October 12,13 ,19, and 20. Habitat is hoping for up to 15 volunteers each Thursday and Friday. If you are interested please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact Rich Detering for details.
This is also the time to help Habitat financially. The houses are sold at cost the those in need. Our contributions allow Habitat to find new land and to start new homes. Mark your contributions for Habitat and place them in the offering plate.

The Sophia Way Companion Training

In this workshop, you will gain the skills to make a positive impact in the life of a person experiencing homelessness, mental illness, chemical dependency, or other difficulties by serving as a Companion. You will learn how to compassionately and effectively walk side by side with someone in need on their journey towards a better life. Join us on Saturday, October 21 from 9:00am - noon at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 3030 Bellevue, WY NE, Bellevue. This workshop is required for women who wish to serve as Companions through The Sophia Way program. A donation of $25 is requested for registration.

where other Methodists in the area can come and take a tour of the new projects they have started up and even pitch in to help on a variety of projects related to their parking lot ministry for homeless families. As we notice the need in our neighborhood increasing due to increased housing costs and decreased options for low income families, this is a way to educate ourselves about how others in the United Methodist connection have found to respond. On Tuesday, October 24 come engage with and learn from Real Change's Homeless Speakers Bureau, a group of homeless and formerly homeless people who speak about their personal experiences with homelessness and can inspire us all to social action.
