Principal Message:  September 28, 2017

D ear Parents,
Can you believe that it is the end of September?  I am so proud of all of our students for learning to have a Growth Mindset.  Our students are willing to take risks, ask questions, and continue to persevere  through any obstacles because we know that we just have not learned it YET!  We are very excited for our Talent Show next week. It is always fun to see the many talents of our students.
At Lovejoy Elementary, we are always striving to get better.  As much as I appreciate the "Good Jobs!" we hear, I pay much closer attention to what we can do better to create a better experience for each child that walks through our doors every day including yours. My goal as the principal of this campus is to not figure out how all children can fit into a box that we create, but instead create many boxes where your child can find success. If you find we don't have a box for your child, don't hesitate to contact me.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me.
All My Best,
Wendy Craft

October Leopard Life Skill
This month our little leopards have been working hard at having a growth mindset by exercising their brains and tackling difficult challenges. They are beginning to embrace the idea that there may be some things that they can't do YET, but they can get smarter with hard work and effort. Now that we are just about at the end of September, we are getting ready to focus on the Leopard Life Skill for October, "Self Control." Students will be learning that self control is the ability to control one's brain and body to make positive choices even when it's difficult. We will emphasize that having self control means listening to our inner "brain voice" that guides us to make good choices and to control our impulses. There are so many real examples of when this skill is important in students' daily lives. For example, self control is needed in order to stop talking in class, to take their time with their schoolwork, to resist doing something that would be hurtful to themselves or someone else, and to stay calm when they are feeling mad, frustrated, or upset. While we're teaching and practicing this Leopard Life Skills here at school, it would be helpful to reinforce the importance of self control at home as well. The more real life applications students have with the skill, the more likely they are to begin doing it on their own. If you would like to know more about the nine character strengths, skills, and mindsets from the Character Lab organization, you can visit their website at www.characterlab.org. You can also contact me at any time. Thank you for your continued support in growing heart strong leopard leaders!
Mrs. Ruggeri ☺

Eagle Project: Hurricane Harvey Relief
"My name is Hunter Kight, I am an 8th grader at Willow Springs, and I've just started my eagle project. I have chosen to help the hurricane Harvey victims for my project. Many of the victims did not have flood insurance and this looks to be the most costly natural disaster in U.S. history. The clean-up and rebuild effort will take more than a year. There is a time during disasters like this that charities experience donor fatigue. This is where donations drop to their lowest. Through my project I am trying to reduce donor fatigue, by collecting basic essential items. I have partnered with the Salvation Army to collect supplies like canned goods, baby food/formula, hygiene items, diapers and cases of water. Large donation boxes are located at each school to collect these items. I will leave these boxes out until November 3, 2017. Please consider supporting this effort by filling the boxes and helping the victims." For additional information, please click here.

The Lovejoy Running Club
The Lovejoy Running Club will be meeting every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:00 PM near the Duck Pond at Celebration Park. LHS Senior, Sloan Carevic, will be hosting a swim camp for elementary students on September 23rd and October 21st at the Lovejoy swimming pool located behind Sloan Creek Intermediate School.  For additional information please click here.

Hurricane Relief
In light of the devastation caused by Harvey, Anthony Tang (LHS Senior) is leading the way to help those affected by the hurricane. From sorting toothbrushes to organizing fundraising drives in the district, Anthony has been doing anything he can to help the cause.
Anthony, a senior at Lovejoy High, first learned of the traumatic impacts of the storm when he contacted a childhood friend who lives in Houston. "My buddy's family was fortunately not severely affected because his house is on higher ground, but many other houses in surrounding neighborhoods were flooded and ruined. I can't imagine the troubles those families are facing, but I want to help in any way I can." Anthony has reached out and partnered with Trusted World and Salvation Army and has delivered boxes of donations to be transported from their warehouses. "It makes me smile to see how genuinely cooperative people are in this time of need. Everyone I have worked with seems so willing to help."
Anthony is requesting the help of fellow Leopards.  There is a need for clothes and shoes, especially for youth. Other supplies in need include Adult X-Large T-Shirts and undergarments, as well as Women's Sports-bras. If you wish to donate supplies or help pack donations to support this cause, please contact Anthony at:  [email protected]
