Three district students named
National Merit Semifinalists
Congratulations to our three National Merit Semifinalists: Byron Nelson High School's Zoe Bass and Haniyah Burney, and Eaton High School's Tobey Mathis!
The trio's honor means they are among the top 1 percent of students in the United States who took the PSAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The program, one of the most rigorous in the nation, annually honors the 16,000 students with the best test scores as National Merit Semifinalists out of the 1.5 million high school students who take one of the qualifying tests during their junior year.
The National Merit Scholarship program will next determine which students will receive the distinction of finalist based on the academic performance throughout the entirety of their high school careers as well as the difficulty of courses taken and SAT scores. Winners will be chosen from the pool of finalists based on all previous criteria as well as each finalist's essay and his or her involvement in activities and leadership roles.

Secondary students perform in district's first Northwest ISD Band Showcase
|
Great work by all of the band programs from every district middle school and high school at the first Northwest ISD Band Showcase on Monday!
Each high school marching band performed a routine, and each middle school band performed music from the stands. Following all school performances, they joined together for a combined song on the field.

District middle school musical takes place this Friday and Saturday
|
Northwest ISD's annual middle school musical will host performances this Friday, Sept. 29, and Saturday, Sept. 30, with students performing "Beauty and the Beast Jr.," a family-friendly production of the popular Disney movie.
Performances will take place at Byron Nelson High School, located at 2775 Bobcat Blvd. in Trophy Club, beginning with a 7 p.m. performance on Friday. Two performances will follow on Saturday, the first at 1 p.m., followed by the second at 5 p.m. Tickets are just $5 for students and $10 for adults.

Byron Nelson homecoming this week, followed by Northwest and Eaton in coming weeks
|
The Byron Nelson Bobcats host the district's first homecoming game of the year this Friday! The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m., with the crowning of homecoming king and queen scheduled for halftime.
Next week, the Northwest Texans will host their homecoming on Oct. 6, and the following week Eaton will host its forthcoming (as this year is the school's first year to have a senior class) on Oct. 13. The crowning of king and queen will also take place at halftime of these games.

Cox students, teachers work on bucket-filling challenges
|
Great community caring is taking place at Cox Elementary School! Teachers and students across the school are currently taking part in "bucket-filling" challenges after a first-grade teacher read the book "How Full is Your Bucket" to her students.
Those students then cleaned tables after they ate for the next lunch group, and the challenge of helping others was passed on to other teachers and their classes. Fifth-grade students recently took part in the challenge by thanking the school's bus drivers for their hard work with gifts as appreciation and cleaning their buses.

Reminder on school safety procedures
|
The safety of our students and staff is of utmost importance in Northwest ISD. Campuses will practice various safety drills during the school year so we are prepared for any possible scenario that could take place at your child's campus.
One of the emergency procedures that is used from time-to-time is the shelter-in-place action. During this procedure, students are safe at all times, remain in the classroom and learning continues to take place as normal. The campus cannot legally explain why a shelter-in-place procedure is used. This is not to alarm you, but it is for legal confidentiality reasons, respect and the protection of our students and staff members. We do want to stress the fact that shelter-in-place is very different from a lockdown procedure. During a lockdown, all instruction is stopped.
If students are ever in any kind of danger, we will notify families immediately via email, phone call and website. If you ever have any questions about our safety drills and emergency procedures, please do not hesitate to contact your child's campus or the administration building. Your children's safety remains our top priority.
