Bright Spot

Today's Bright Spot comes from Rev. Chad Johnson of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin

On Sunday, August 13, Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin was blessed to host the Joint Synodical African Worship Service. Pastor Wal Reat was in attendance and gave a moving sermon on unity amongst the body. Musical leadership was provided from the Anyuak, Nuer, and Dinka worshipping communities. People traveled from throughout the synod in order to participate. A wonderful meal was provided by the Anyuak Faith Community. A joint offering was given to support the work of the Lutheran Center in South Sudan. The whole experience was a tremendous blessing as this was only the second time that our African ministries of the Southeastern Minnesota Synod came together for a joint worship experience. There is talk about doing this with some
regularity.Be praying for it!

Faith Formation Resource

A weekly resource provided by Julie Klock of the synod's Faith Formation Network!

Dear Parents,

What do your children think YOU think is important? You probably hope they think it's God, or faith, or family. It's worth checking out from time to time, just to make sure you are sending the message you intend.

One interesting way to do this is to play family pictionary. Pick the name of a family member and ask everyone to draw what they think that person values most. Do their pictures match yours? If they do, say a prayer of thanksgiving. If they don't, start trying to see your life through the kids' eyes and identify what made them see something else. Then adjust course and carry on.

Please note: You are free to reproduce any of the Faith Formation tips provided here in your own newsletters, bulletins or other communications.

Planning for Your Retirement

Dear Leaders,

On October 16, the Southeastern Minnesota Synod will host a "Planning for Retirement" conversation. All rostered leaders who are 60 or older are encouraged to attend. This conversation will be held on Monday, October 16 from 9AM to 1PM at Assisi Heights. Lunch will be provided, so please be sure to RSVP by Monday, October 9 to [email protected].

Topics to be covered will include:
  • emotional and spiritual planning for retirement
  • exploring the question "how do you know when it is time to make that transition?"
  • what it means to be on the retired roster (the privileges and obligations)
  • the possibilities for post-retirement involvement in ministry
Deacon Terri Endres from Portico Benefits Services will also be present to share with us some general information about planning for retirement. Please note that this does not replace Portico Benefits Pre-Retirement Seminar, but is meant to focus on some of the intrapersonal aspects of planning for retirement.

As much as we are hosting this conversation, we will also participate in it since we each anticipate our retirements in two years.

Please join us!
