Keep on Singing!
Before departing from this world, Moshe is commanded to write a song and teach it to his nation (Deut 31:19). Maimonides, views this as a directive to every Jew, in every age, to write a specific poem in the Torah (called "Haazinu). For what appears to be a technical reason, Maimonides then extends this obligation to writing an entire Torah scroll - "since one may not write the Torah in segments" (Sefer Torah 7:1).

At first glance this seems unfair and  unreasonable.  While Haazinu is a relatively short composition, the Torah in its entirety is 304,805 letters!
Perhaps
Maimonides was teaching us a fundamental lesson in accessing the true joy of life. To truly sing the Divine song requires preparation and discipline. Like a violinist in a  symphony, we can
not simply arrive on stage and expect to perform with any proficiency. Likewise, to master the song of our people requires practice and dedication.  It simply can't be achieved in "segments." It requires full immersion in its totality.  To expect anything else is unfair and unrealistic.

Each year as we prepare for the High Holidays, we remind ourselves of the need to write a song - to feel the joy of Jewish life and transmit that energy to the next generation.  Let our year be filled will song, immersion in Jewish life, and the satisfaction of seeing the exuberance of faith permeate our community.

Looking forward to seeing you, this Friday, on Yom Kippur.   Gemar Chatimah Tova!

Rabbi Daniel Green
