The Masonry Society just concluded our Annual Meeting in La Jolla, CA. Among the many educational programs were presentations on sustainable self-consolidating grout and meeting energy code requirements with concrete masonry. In addition, TMS's Sustainability Committee met to review ballot results from an update to the
Masonry Is Sustainable
brochure. The current version, which contains information on LEED 2009, is available here. The new version, updated for LEED v4, is expected in early 2018.
At the meetings sponsorship of this newsletter was also discussed. Our goal is to have 100% of the cost of production covered by sponsors. In the last few years we have fallen short of that goal by over $2000. In the spirit of being financially sustainable ourselves, I urge you to consider a donation in support for 2018. Engineers Find Sustainability Question Has Evolved From 'What' to 'How'

There's been a significant shift in the acceptance of sustainable practices in civil engineering between ASCE's 2017 International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure and the first gathering three years ago. "In 2014, we heard, 'Tell me what this is,'" said Doug Sereno, an organizer of the first ICSI who this year was a speaker. "This week, it's 'Now tell us how to do it.'" Read more.
Pew & FEMA Host Resilience Forum

Recently the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Resilient National Partnership Network hosted the 2017 Annual Partnership Forum "Innovation in Resilience" to explore how thought leaders across diverse industries are innovating the way we view and approach resilience for a stronger, healthier, and more collaborative future. This forum included an important conversation with FEMA about recovery and rebuilding efforts in response to the 2017 hurricanes, as well as a discussion on emerging trends across resilience.
CODES and STANDARDS
The Green Globes rating system is often considered an alternative to LEED. Though not as widely used as LEED, Green Globes has often been on the leading edge of green building rating programs. Green Globes Standard Public Comment Period Opens
GREEN BUILDING INITIATIVE
The Green Building Initiative (GBI) has announced the third and final public comment period on BSR/GBI 01- 201X. Only substantive changes made since the last comment period are subject to public comment. In order to avoid confusion as to what language is included, the revised language has been put into its own document, the Limited Revisions. This is the document you should review to submit your comments. The public comment period will begin on November 3, 2017 and all comments must be received by 5:00 PM ET on December 18, 2017. The Systole and Diastole in Recycling
GREEN BUILDING LAW UPDATE
Recycling is not new. 11,000 years before Christ the people in the Nile valley recognized the intrinsic value of reusing waste. But maybe not since that dawn of civilization has recycling undergone the wide fluctuation, good and bad, that we are seeing right now. The bad news is that on July 18, China notified the he World Trade Organization in two filings it would be imposing a ban on imports of certain kinds of solid waste. The resultant chaos in the recycling market is because last year, China imported 7.3 million metric tonnes of waste plastics from developed countries including the U.S. In 2016, the U.S. sent $5.6 Billion of recyclables to China. TRUE considers the entire lifecycle of products and materials and encourages the redesign of these lifecycles so that all materials are resources for others to use. TRUE is administered by GBCI and serves as a complement to the LEED green building rating system created by USGBC. TRUE is a whole systems approach that profoundly changes our approach to resources, production and facility operations. TRUE is about restructuring product and distribution systems to prevent waste from being manufactured in the first place.
