November is Native American Heritage Month.
Our banner image is of the Roundhouse at Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park, Pine Grove, California. The park preserves an outcropping of marbleized limestone containing 1,185 mortar holes, the largest collection of bedrock mortars in North America. Generations of California Indians used the mortars (or Chaw'se) to grind acorns into meal. The park site has been, and continues to be, a place of cultural importance to tribal communities. The Roundhouse is used each year for social gatherings and ceremonial events, and is designated as California Historical Landmark No. 1001. Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Awarding Excellence in Historic Preservation
The Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) and California State Parks had the pleasure of presenting the 2017 Governor's Historic Preservation Awards at a special ceremony on November 2, 2017, in Sacramento, California. Seven projects and one individual received well-deserved recognition for their outstanding efforts on behalf of preserving California's heritage.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the following sponsors who made the awards ceremony possible:
Kathryn Gualtieri
The Governor's Historic Preservation Awards is the only state-sponsored awards program in California and has honored excellence in preservation every year since 1986.
