California Office of Historic Preservation
November is Native American Heritage Month.  Our banner image is of the Roundhouse at Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park, Pine Grove, California. The park preserves an outcropping of marbleized limestone containing 1,185 mortar holes, the largest collection of bedrock mortars in North America. Generations of California Indians used the mortars (or Chaw'se) to grind acorns into meal. The park site has been, and continues to be, a place of cultural importance to tribal communities. The Roundhouse is used each year for social gatherings and ceremonial events, and is designated as California Historical Landmark No. 1001. Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  (Photo courtesy of Jennifer Bourn/ Inspired Imperfection
