Northwest Board Notes: Nov. 13 Meeting
The Northwest Independent School District Board of Trustees met yesterday - Monday, Nov. 13 - during a regularly scheduled meeting. This is a recap of the major actions and reports from the meeting. To see every item that was discussed or voted on, click here.

Adams students choose lion as mascot, navy blue and white as school colors
Trustees heard from Principal Cynthia Webber of Adams Middle School regarding the student choices for her new school's mascot and colors. Adams students have chosen the lion as their mascot as well as blue and white as the school colors, setting the first part of the new campus's identity before its August 2018 opening.
Students chose the mascot and colors from other student-suggested options. The choice of a lion as the school mascot pays homage to the campus namesake, Leo Adams, as the "Leo" astrological sign is represented by a lion. The navy blue chosen as a school color will be the same navy blue used in the high school Adams will feed into, Eaton.
Mrs. Webber and district officials will now work with the school's architects to create a logo based on the lion mascot and blue and white school colors.
Adams Middle School is currently under construction in the southern portion of the district, across the street from Eaton High School and Schluter Elementary School. It uses the district's most recent prototype design for middle schools, also seen in Wilson Middle School.
Rezoning efforts for the school will begin in the spring, with district officials aiming to present proposed boundary maps before spring break begins on March 12.
Curtis Elementary School proposed as name for upcoming campus
Northwest ISD administrators presented Lizzie Curtis as the proposed namesake for the district's next elementary school during the district's regular school board meeting on Monday, Nov. 13, with a vote regarding the name from trustees scheduled for December.
Alice "Lizzie" Curtis was the first teacher of Blue Mound School, the first educational facility in Haslet. Emily Conklin, the district's executive director of communications and community relations, said naming committee members wanted to honor the educational history of Northwest ISD.
Mrs. Conklin said the district is now seeking any additional information community members may have regarding Lizzie Curtis for the opening of the new school. The campus is currently under construction in the southern portion of the district and is located north of U.S. Highway 287, east of F.M. 156 and south of Bonds Ranch Road. It is scheduled to open in August 2018.
Trustees will vote at their next regular meeting on Dec. 11 whether to approve the name. Friends and relatives of the Curtis family can email Mrs. Conklin with further information about the proposed namesake at econklin@nisdtx.org.
Contractor approved for Hughes Elementary addition
Trustees approved Ratcliff Constructors as the district's contracting partner to expand Hughes Elementary School.
Hughes will receive an expansion to increase the school's student population size from 650 to 850. This expansion will begin soon, with construction scheduled to finish around the start of the 2018-19 school year.
The addition marks the first major expansion to a school to begin as part of the district's 2017 bond package. Two additional elementary schools will receive expansions, as will Medlin and Tidwell middle schools, and Byron Nelson and Eaton high schools.
Facilities department provides update on construction projects
Northwest ISD's facilities and planning team discussed the status of under-construction and planned-construction projects, with all projects currently on their scheduled timelines.
All athletic-improvement projects - including resurfacing of tracks and football fields - are complete, with the exception of installing turf at baseball and softball fields. Those projects - currently taking place at Byron Nelson and Northwest high schools - are in progress and on schedule.
Adams Middle School is maintaining its construction timeline, and construction on Elementary School No. 18 - proposed to be named Curtis Elementary School - has begun with drainage and foundation work. An addition to Beck Elementary School, scheduled for completion in the spring, rounds out current projects.
Major projects currently in the planning stages are as follows: an addition to Hughes Elementary School (construction to begin soon), the design of a new elementary prototype (construction on Elementary No. 19 to begin in the spring), an addition to Byron Nelson (construction to begin in the spring) and the district natatorium (construction to begin in fall 2018). Additionally, Prairie View and Beck elementary schools will soon receive roofing and HVAC updates.
Board president's report
President Mark Schluter announced the board would meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, for Team of Eight Training. At that meeting, the board plans to discuss and possibly take action to fill the vacant board seat, Place 7.
Texas law says the school board has two options at this point: appoint an individual to fill the term until the May 2018 election or operate with six board members until the May 2018 election. State law does not permit the board to call a special election to fill the vacancy between now and the standard May election date. An update will be provided after the Dec. 4 meeting.
In other action, the board
- Approved the Texas Association of School Boards Culture of Voting Resolution, which encourages educators, students and community members to exercise their rights to vote. Potential voters can obtain registration materials and resources at www.votetexas.gov, where current voters can also gather materials to update their information.

- Recognized Fastsigns Alliance for serving as a district Partner in Education.
