New Learner Bridge:  WELCOME to ACLC!!

ACLC's Helping Houston

Summer Highlights

New Bungalows! Two more bungalows have been added next to the two bungalows in the courtyard next to the Center. The remodeling of the insides is almost finished, and each bungalow will be carpeted, insulated, sheetrock will be added, and the insides will be painted. We are looking forward to the expanded and improved Resource space, meeting space, and storage capacity.

New Family Forums- New families joined a few established returning families in our annual family forums on the 13 th (middle school) and 14 th (high school). Families were given an introduction to what makes ACLC such a wonderfully unique place to learn- our culture, our community, and our community's democratic organizations (e.g. JC, Leadership). Families were also introduced and inducted to PAC and CCEF, before going on a tour and having their questions answered. Families have given some informal feedback that they felt welcomed and appreciated having this evening to get their questions answered. Several even showed up to the
Campus Beautification Day.

Campus Beautification Day- On Saturday, August 19 th , families and learners showed up to get the campus looking at it's best before the first day of school. Trees were trimmed and weeds pulled, and all of classrooms and the Center were prepped for the first day. One family even painted the bungalow that will be used for added Resource space! Afterward there was a potluck that brought together our community for lunch.

Staff Update

New Community Members : Please join me in welcoming several new facilitators and staff members to ACLC this year. This group has already impressed all of us with their drive and commitment to the school.

*Jeremy Goodreau comes to us from Houston, where he served as the Head of Upper School at a boarding school. He will be working with us as our Lead Facilitator.

*Loreley Smith comes to us from Nea. Her warmth and knowledge have already proven to be a great fit to our middle school team.

*Beth Cutright comes to us from a local private school (Beacon). She is experienced in middle school instruction, and has been a perfect fit for our middle school team.

*Jon Pabico comes to us from Bishop O'dowd. Jon will be facilitating Algebra1 and 2, and he is already getting great reviews from his new learners.

*Daniel Freedman comes all the way from Maine, where he recently graduated college. He will be facilitating Physics, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. He has been working hard to make sure that his learners all have an engaging and productive year.

*Amy Wilson comes to us from Tilden Prep where she taught Spanish and supported learning in several subjects. She will be facilitating Spanish 1, Spanish 2, and Spanish 3.

*Patricia Felix comes to ACLC after several years in education as a teacher and paraprofessional. She will be working primarily with our high school learners as a paraprofessional, and we are very excited to have her share her expertise and compassion for learners.

*Priscila Rodriguez comes to us from Watsonville High where she did her student teaching. This is the perfect next step for her. She has taught both World History and Economics.

*Taj Kaur comes to us from Destination College Advising Corps, having worked in a campus-based partnership last year as a college advisor. She is working part time with both ACLC and Nea to support our HS learners to and through college.

* Irena Ademaj comes to us after 3 years of teaching in private and charter schools. She currently works as a sorority supervisor at UC Berkeley and will be facilitating one Fundamentals of Spanish course for our 7 th graders.

* Mark  Rabinowitz  comes to us from industry. He taught in New York and was pulled away to work at IBM. He returns to the classroom here at ACLC to facilitate 7th and 8th grade math. We are very luck to have him.

Greetings from Parent Action Committee Coordinator
 Welcome Back, ACLC Community!

I wanted to introduce PAC and myself to all the new families. My name is Andrea Ruport and this year I will be serving as your Parent Action Committee (PAC) coordinator. This is my 5th year as an ACLC parent and I currently have three children attending; Ruby (6th), Cohen (8th) and Gavin (10th). My main goal this year as is to get as many parents involved and connected as possible.

What is PAC you ask? If you are a parent or guardian YOU ARE PAC! PAC is ACLC's version of a PTA, but with no elections and no dues. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend meetings and share their time and talents. PAC's main goal is to support ACLC facilitators, staff and learners and to help enhance the school experience. How do we do that? PAC helps to coordinate, get volunteers and organize many events such as; Back to School Night, Healthy Lunch, Art & Diversity Festival, Couch Nights, the End-of-Year Picnic, Graduation, Pancake Breakfast, Chili Cook Off and so much more! Please consider learning more by attending our first meet and greet.

Don't miss what's happening at school! Here are a few ways to communicate and stay connected-

1. Listserv is the open forum for parents, learners and facilitators. Sometimes announcements go here as well as on Jupiter Grades, and sometimes it is a place for a thread of conversation in the community. To join, go to ACLC website under "Join Our Community" tab.

2. Jupiter Grades part 1: Parents and Learners can log in to their specific Jupiter Ed/Jupiter Grades page that contains information from facilitators about assignments, due dates, projects, tests, etc. You should have received an email reminder from the school about how to log on to this system. Parents and learners are able to message the facilitators directly through this mechanism (the communication here might be most relevant related to classroom assignments and activities).

3. Jupiter Grades Part 2: Staff, administrators, PAC, CCEF, parents, learners, etc. can have an announcement sent to the whole community through Jupiter Grades. PAC, CCEF, parents, etc. need to have Kira (our school manager) initiate the sending of the message as this feature is a one-way official communication from the school.

Note that when I send messages that are "official" announcements for PAC-related meetings and activities I have the message sent through BOTH Listserv and Jupiter Grades. These Jupiter Grade messages from the school go to the email address you have listed with the school. You will receive them in your email.

4. Facilitators and staff at ACLC have email addresses (see the ACLC webpage for the drop down menu "We are Facilitators") and can be messaged directly.

5. There is an ACLC e-newsletter from the school, generally sent twice a month. This is also sent out through BOTH Listserv and Jupiter Grades (again, they arrive in the email you have listed with the school).
