CALL FOR PRESENTERS
High School Marine Science Symposium
Our one event this year will be on
Thursday, March 8, 2018
at Northeastern University in Boston.
Scientists, graduate students, educators, and others working in marine-related fields are invited to inspire the next generation by presenting hands-on workshops and drop-in activities to high school students. Click here to submit a proposal before December 22nd.

If you or your organization is interested in
sponsoring
the event by providing scholarship funds for students from low-income school districts to be able to attend, it can do so at the $100, $250, $500, $1,000 or higher level. Please contact Val at
[email protected]
. Sponsors will receive special mention in our program as well as at the events, and donors at the $500 level or higher will also receive special mention on event signage.
Teachers, save the date: Registration for schools will launch in mid-January. Because the event fills up quickly, we encourage teachers to get administrative approval for the trip now so that you can register as soon as registration goes live.

Congratulations to two MME members for recently being recognized recently by the Massachusetts
Association of Science Teachers (MAST). Board member Don Pinkerton of Revere High School won the Massachusetts Biology Teacher of the Year. Don initiated a biotech elective that is thriving, and is a strong advocate for ELL learners. Also recognized by MAST is Sandra Locke, STEM Coach for Grades 4-8 in the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District, was recognized as the Barnstable County Teacher of the Year. Sandra is one of the founding members of MME, and has been working with children for 35 years.
Congratulations to MME Board Member,
Val Perini, who was recently elected to the Executive Committee of the
New England Ocean Science Education Collaborative (NEOSEC). In this role, Val will spend three years helping to direct the work of this innovative group, which works to
leverage New England's extraordinary assets to engage the public in understanding the vital connections between people and the ocean. NEOSEC holds a biennial Ocean Literacy Summit, the next of which is slated to be held in the fall of 2018 in the Boston area. MME is an Associate Member of NEOSEC.

NOAA's 2018 Teacher at Sea
Program. The mission of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Teacher at Sea Program is to provide pre-kindergarten through college-level teachers a hands-on, real-world research experience working at sea with world-renowned NOAA scientists, thereby giving teachers unique insight into oceanic and atmospheric research crucial to our nation. The Gulf of Maine Marine Education Association (GOMMEA) and the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation (GOMLF) invite you to join us for an evening event focused on Marine Debris November 17, 2017 from 5:00-7:30pm at the Seacoast Science Center in Rye, NH. The event is open to anyone

- "STEAM Workshop for Early Childhood Educators" on December 9th from 8:30am-12:30pm. The topic will be "deep ocean adventure", the third installment in a series for early childhood educators.
- "Climate Science for Educators" is open to middle school educators and others from February 21 to 23, 2018. PDP or graduate credit is available.
The Museum Institute for Teaching Science invites participants for a 2-day Alternative Energy Workshop for Middle and High School Educators, which will be held in partnership with MassAudubon. The North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) had to cancel its 2017 conference in Puerto Rico last month due to the extensive hurricane damage. However, parts of the conference were held virtually, and recordings of presentations are available here. They are also hosting a webinar to showcase their eeWORKS initiative on Tuesday, November 14 from 1-2pm. Click here for more information and to register.
Have you ever considered forming an Envirothon team? The Mass Envirothon Fall Workshop - held on November 15 from 8:30am - 2:15pm at UMass Amherst - is an opportunity to get a good look at the program and test whether it might be a good fit for you and your students. Prospective coaches are welcome to come alone or bring students. Learn how to get your team started on community research (whether you are in an urban, suburban, or rural community), how to turn current issue research into a relevant action project that benefits the community, and what the judges look for in a team presentation. The 2018 Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Student Contest is underway.
Students ages 11-18 are invited to submit visual art, poetry, prose, film, and music (new!) that explore this year's theme: Our Oceans in a Changing Climate.

Additionally, Bow Seat's 2018 Marine Debris Creative Advocacy Competition
is also underway. This national competition challenges middle and high school students to lead a creative campaign in their school or community that educates others and inspires action to reduce or prevent marine debris. It's a perfect opportunity for green teams, marine science or sustainability clubs, arts groups, honor society members, Scout troops, or any environmentally-minded teens
