On the 79th anniversary of the beginning of Kristallnacht, Nov. 9, AHEPA shared a 1938 excerpt from B'nai B'rith International  Magazine that cites AHEPA's  condemnation of the persecution of Jewish people.

Greek professors a force to be reckoned with in US academia
Ekathimerini (Nov. 12)

A growing number of figures among the academic community's elite in the United States received their undergraduate degrees in Greece, which, proportionally speaking, ranks second in the world in terms of the number of academics it has exported to top American universities. It is outranked only by Israel, which has a particularly strong presence in the areas of research and technology.   read more

Greece Puts $12.8 Billion Investments at Risk as Projects Stall
Bloomberg (Nov. 10)

Two of Greece's biggest projects -- together valued at about 11 billion euros ($12.8 billion) -- have stalled on bureaucratic and legal wranglings, raising questions about the country's ability to draw investments it desperately needs for an economic recovery.  read more

Greater protection as Cyprus joins EU defence pact
Cyprus Mail (Nov. 13)

Cyprus was one of 23 EU member states which signed the
EU defence pact Pesco on Monday in Brussels.  "For the first time, a shield has been created which protects the Republic of Cyprus as a European border from any outside interventions," said President Nicos Anastasiades, welcoming the development.  "It is not an aggressive but defensive agreement, and this has a great deal of importance, and therefore Turkey's key argument that the presence of the Turkish army would contribute to the protection of the Republic of Cyprus from outside interventions is also neutralised."   read more

Beyond Mamma Mia! Hollywood courted as Greece vies for slice of movie millions
The Guardian  (Nov. 13)

Nikos Giannopoulos still vividly recalls the excitement that swept the people of Amorgos when French film-makers arrived to make The Big Blue three decades ago.   "Everyone wanted to be a part of it," says Giannopoulos, the movie's executive producer, as he takes in the remote island's dramatic landscape. "It was a game changer that helped put Amorgos on the map."  read more

Deconstructing monochronism in 'Gods in Color: Polychromy in the Ancient World'
The Daily Californian (Oct. 30)

Remember the last time you went to a museum or botanical garden? Were there marble sculptures scattered around the galleries or bronze statues as centerpieces for fountains? You could even think about the last time you drove through a neighborhood with homes dramatically adorned with marble lion statues. There probably aren't any soft skin tones, red patterns or blue fur in your recollection.  read more

Commentary: The Immigrant's Struggle and Vindication
The National Herald (Nov. 9)

A photograph taken by our own Costas Bej, in which Nicole Malliotakis, candidate for Mayor of New York, hugs her father while her  mother stands by in tears, touched us deeply.  It is a photo that shows the daughter of a Greek father and a Cuban  mother, both immigrants, who has climbed quite high in New York  politics, for which her parents naturally are quite proud, and, in turn,  she showers them with love and gratitude.  read more

Greek fans serenade Giannis Antetokounmpo following game
FanRag Sports Network (Nov. 8)

Tuesday was a mixed bag for Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, as he finalized a long-term endorsement deal with Nike during the day. That would be followed by a 124-119 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Bucks' fourth consecutive defeat, but Antetokounmpo's spirits would be lifted by many of the fans who remained in the Quicken Loans Arena stands following the game.  There was a sizable Greek contingent at the game, with many wanting nothing more than a moment with one of Greece's best athletes. And when Antetokounmpo expressed doubts that many of those fans were Greek, they sang Greece's national anthem in unison.   read more

From the Basement Hockey League to Iowa Wild, Sam Anas has something to prove
The Athletic (Nov. 10)

If it weren't for the audacity of adults telling 16-year-old kids that they were "too small" or "not good enough," there wouldn't be players grinding it out on the ice with a chip on their shoulder, trying to prove the naysayers wrong.  Sam Anas would have never left Maryland to average a point per game at one of the top Division-I hockey programs in Quinnipiac, nor would he become one of the more dynamic wingers in the Minnesota Wild system.
