MAIZE WAY CHARACTER TRAIT - NOVEMBER
RESPONSIBILITY
Being trustworthy....being reliable....completing an obligation....accepting your share of the work that needs to be done....accepting responsibility for your mistakes.
 NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
We take safety and security very seriously at Vermillion Elementary.  All exterior doors are kept locked throughout the day, and visitors must enter through a secure entrance in the office, sign in, and wear a visitor sticker. We also require all of our classroom volunteers to pass a background check each year before they can work with our students. Surveillance cameras have been installed in all of our hallways and the exterior of the building for monitoring purposes.

We have safety drills on a regular basis.
  • Fire drills are held monthly, and each year one drill is monitored by the Sedgwick County Fire Department.  Maps with a primary exit are posted in every room.  Once a teacher has evacuated his or her students to the safe location, he or she confirms that all students are present.  Numbers are posted on each of our exterior door locations to enable first responders to arrive at the correct entry point for an emergency.
  • Tornado drills are held three times a year.  During these drills the entire student body and staff is moved to the FEMA shelter (gymnasium).  We are able to move everyone to this safe location in about five minutes.  Teachers have a safety backpack with supplies for students in the event of an extended tornado warning.
  • An evacuation drill is practiced yearly.  During this drill, the staff and students walk to Maize Elementary School in a very quiet and orderly fashion.  If it was unsafe for us to be in the building, we could quickly move to a new safe location.
  • Lock down drills occur twice a year.  When the announcement is made on the intercom, all students get to their safe location and the staff member quickly secures the door. Our staff received Run, Hide, Fight training when dealing with an internal crisis.  We also have procedures for an external lock down, during an event in which something is happening outside and we need to stay inside the building, but can still continue our normal activities.
I want you to know we are doing everything possible to make sure VES remains safe for students, staff, and parents.

We are thankful for our awesome students, staff, and families at Vermillion. Have a great Thanksgiving holiday.

Sincerely,
Michael Dome
VES Principal

 NURSE KELLI's COLUMN

Dear Boys and Girls,

Getting chapped lips is the pits! It hurts to smile when you have chapped lips, and the world needs all the smiles it can get.

Don't lick your lips if they are chapped. When the spit dries, they are more chapped. The best thing is to have your own Chap Stick that you keep in your pocket or desk with your name on it. It puts a nice slick coating of petroleum jelly on your lips, and keeps them moist from the inside. The school nurse has petroleum jelly that she can put on with a swab, and this will prevent your lips from getting so chapped that they bleed and hurt. It feels so soothing.

At night, before you go to bed, ask your Mom or Dad if you can put a little petroleum jelly on your lips and around your cuticles. Have them help you put some lotion all over your body so your skin doesn't become itchy. Also keep bringing your water bottle to school as this helps you stay hydrated (and it will help with all of those sore throats that are starting).

Isn't it amazing all the little things you can do to make yourself feel better?

Stay healthy!
Wuzzy

You may help students with school work, supervise at recess, patrol the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities.

Signing up is easy
  1. Simply view the WatachDOG monthly calendars which are located on the VES website to see what dates are available. Email jdavis@usd266.com with your requested date(s) - include your name, phone number, student and teacher's name. (only two WatchDOGS per day please)
  2. You must complete a volunteer background check prior to your first scheduled WatchDOG date. The online background check can be completed thru the VES Website(a volunteer background check must be completed each year)

 RONALD McDONALD HOUSE

Ronald McDonald House
Each year RMHC Wichita sponsors a state wide Pull Tab Program. We collect the metal tab piece located on the top of a soda can or any other aluminum can with a tab. These pieces are known as pop tabs or pull tabs. (Most soup and cat food can tabs are made from tin so unfortunately, we cannot take them.

This activity not only helps save the earth, but it also raises much-needed awareness about how one individual's contribution can make a substantial difference for a family staying at one of our Ronald McDonald Houses or using our Ronald McDonald Family Room.

Collecting pull tabs is fun and easy!It is also a great way for children, families, schools and companies to get involved!

Drop off pull tabs in your child's classroom.
 LOST & FOUND

If you have lost an item, please check our Lost & Found area located in the breezeway just outside the school office.
