Woodard and Venable made a great showing at the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship in Houston, Texas.
Thorneblade Club's Dawn Woodard came out of the gate a little slow shooting a 5 over 77 in the first round of stroke play. Seattling into her stride Woodard charged back with a one under 71 to finish T13th in the Stroke play portion of the tournament; securing the 13th seed for first round of match play. Carrying the momentum into the matches, Woodard carded 5 birdies in match one against Laura Carson (Vero Beach, FL) to take the match 3 up. With her putter on fire, Woodard proceeded to card another 5 birdies in her second match to take down Mina Hardin from Mexico 5 up. Entering the sweet 16 against Shannon Johnson (Norton, MA) Woodard took the match 17 holes being 2 over par, unfortunatly getting edged out and losing the match 2 down.
Holly Tree Country Club's, Lea Venable, represented South Carolina well, as well. After two rounds of stroke play, Venable ended up tied for 50th with an 81-76 two day total of 157 securing the 51 seed for first round matches. Getting paired against Kim Benedict (Bonita Springs, FL) Venable had the match all square going into the turn, then ran into the bogey train. Bogeying the next four holes to loose the match 4 down.
Congratulations ladies on great playing and always representing the state of South Carolina and WSCGA with some fantastic golf. Travel Safe and see you soon.
