Lake Nona Middle School

I had written on this page a few weeks back that the school weeks during October and November are quite busy and packed with a number of exciting special events. This week's issue supports that again. In fact, this Friday it is already time to release the students' Progress Reports for the quarter. Please also remember that next Monday, November 20 will be a regular school day as that is the second and last make-up day due to Hurricane Irma. The students will be on Thanksgiving Break November 21-24.

Today (November 14th) is our general PTSA and SAC meetings for the month. As always, these are open to all members of our school community and I encourage your involvement. This time of year is especially important as we work on various holiday season events. If your schedule permits, please make every effort to join us at 5:30 PM.

This week's issue is again a bit extended but Assistant Principal Wood and myself felt the community should see all that is included herein. I thank you for taking the time to look over our progress and wish you the best for the rest of the week.

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Knight Veterans
Veterans Day was Saturday, November 11

Our veterans were honored by a short concert from our Boys' Choir.

U.S. veteran and math teacher, Christopher Hall complemented the chorus teacher with. . .
"Keep up the great job you're doing with those young men! Lots of talent and all great kids!!! Seeing them perform was very touching! We thank you and them!"

newlans
Ms. Newlan's (8th Grade U.S. History Teacher) display made for Veteran's Day '17

This past Friday, Ms. Newlan's students were asked to write on the lined side about Veterans Day's significance and then use the blank side to write and draw about what Veterans Day means to them while we watched the CNN News about Veterans Day. We also discussed personal connections to veterans in our lives.

Knight Music

Congratulations Rachel Perez!

Rachel Perez was one of only three OCPS students  chosen to be a part of the 71 member All State group. Rachel auditioned in August and just found out she was accepted as a member of the 12 person cello section. She will perform in January in Tampa with the 2018 All State Orchestra.

Male Honor Choir
Congratulations to the following Boy Choir members who represented Lake Nona Middle School in the 2017 Florida ACDA Men's Honor Chorus two weekends ago (pictured at the very top of this week's issue). They performed with selected members throughout our state under the direction of conductor, Ken Taylor. We are very proud of their accomplishments!

Knight Rigor in the Classroom
English Language Arts - Persuasive Writing

In Ms. Summer's and Ms. Royer's  6th grade ELA classroom, students spent the week practicing their persuasive writing skills by planning an essay. Students used a variety of articles to decide whether they think schools should have homework or ban homework. Then, they worked in groups to create a plan for an argumentative essay proving that their side of the argument is the best side.

Knight Athletics
Volleyball Recap

Two weeks ago our volleyball teams faced both Hunter's Creek and Meadow Woods. Our girls team lost against Hunter's Creek and then turned it around by defeating Meadow Woods. This past week, they played Hunter's Creek Charter and Walker Middle School and won both games. They are now 3-1, while our boys remain undefeated and the team to beat with a record of 4-0.

volleyball

Our Lady Knights volleyball team had no answer for Hunter's Creek. They beat us in an upsetting 2 sets. Our girls battled it out until the end and Coach Vazquez tried switching things up with different line ups, but things just weren't going in our favor. We hope to face them again in playoffs for redemption. The Lady Knights bounced back for their next game, with a big win by dominating both sets against Meadow Woods, sending us home early. They beat Hunter's Creek Charter and Walker in just 2 sets as well. I'm liking this trend!! Our Lady Knights are really coming together and improving. They minimized their mistakes against Walker and are really kicking it into gear in preparation for next week and playoffs. Sofia Adamowich and Alexandra Correa (team captain) have been consistent key players for our Lady Knights.

volleyball 2 Lake Nona Knights Boys Volleyball is now the team to beat, not just in the division, but in the county. They have won all, but one of their games in just two sets and beat a difficult opponent Hunters Creek last week. This week they faced Hunter's Creek Charter and Walker Middle School. The Hunter's Creek Charter game was an easy win in the first set at 25-5. However they picked up momentum and beat our boys in the 2nd set, forcing our Knights to their 1st third set of the season. Our boys regrouped under the leadership of Coach Hermida and Coach Giraud, finishing off the game with a victory. Wednesday they showed their poise and experience by beating Walker in just two sets. Last year our boys beat Walker (the number 1 seed) in the quarter finals, so you can be assured they were coming for us.  We have had tremendous play from all of our athletes and stand out play from Jariel Giraud and Alex Castro.

This week our Knights end the regular season with two home games. We play South Creek on Monday and Freedom on Wednesday. Freedom boys are also undefeated, so this could easily be the division championship game. We hope to pack the house so please come support your Knights.
