"Sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God  Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains."

From Mrs. Rowley   happy_thanksgiving_card.jpg

This will be the last Buzz before the Thanksgiving holiday, so let me take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support of our school, and, most of all, for entrusting your precious children to our care. Thanks to our PTO and all who volunteer to make our events such a success; thanks to our faculty and staff for their dedication in educating our students; thanks to our students for their enthusiasm and smiles gracing our hallways; thanks to Fr. Fisher and Fr. Hayes for their support and presence in our school each week; and a special "thank you" to Mrs. McGuire for her tireless work on getting the Buzz to the community each week!

Just a reminder that school will be closed from Wednesday through Friday. I wish each of you a happy, safe and blessed Thanksgiving holiday.

"Father in Heaven, Creator of all and source of all goodness and love, please look kindly upon us and receive our heartfelt gratitude in this time of giving thanks. Thank you for all the graces and blessings. You have bestowed upon us, spiritual and temporal: our faith and religious heritage. Our food and shelter, our health, the loves we have for one another, our family and friends. Dear Father, in Your infinite generosity, please grant us continued graces and blessing throughout the coming year."

Three Kings Gift Shop Donations

Please consider helping us continue a great St. Ambrose School tradition -The Three Kings Gift Shop!  The Three Kings Shop tradition is a Christmas shopping opportunity for our students.  We stock the store with re-gifted items donated by our community that we sell for $1 or $2.  All proceeds go directly to the school.  The kids love it because they get to do their own shopping for their families with the help of our volunteer elves.

We are gladly accepting donations to stock our store!   Please take a look through your closets, drawers, attics, and garages and see if you have items in VERY GOOD condition to donate to our shop.  We could use gifts for moms, dads, children, teenagers, and grandparents.  Things like jewelry, toys, games, stuffed animals, ties, gadgets, mugs, books, religious items, knick-knacks, and any item you might want to receive or give as a gift.  No large gifts as the children must be able to carry the items home. We also need gift wrapping supplies, gift boxes, jewelry boxes, tape, and sturdy shopping bags.  All donated items can be dropped off at the school office before December 8th.  We appreciate your support!  For questions please contact Maryellen DeWolfe at   sdewolfe@earthlink.net .
Book Fair Report

Thanks to all those who supported the book fair! magic_stars_book.jpg

A total of $4,547 in books was sold over the six day period.

The library made a profit of $900. All of that will go back into supporting the library program.

The students are very excited that I was able to get $760 in books for the library as part of the profit package!

Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped in setting up and running the fair. Your support is a big part of what makes this the best little library in the diocese!

Ronald McDonald House

For the past two years, our school students have  been collecting pop tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington DC.  In June, Mrs. Kiernan donated our entire collection of more than 19 lbs. of pop tabs to the RMHC office located on the campus of the INOVA Hospital on Gallows Road.
Let's see if we can top our recent donation in the year to come!  It is a great way to teach our children about philanthropy and the importance of recycling, while raising funds to help sick children and their families.  Help us to help them...

Collection containers will be placed in each classroom and the 6th graders will periodically pick up all pop tabs from each homeroom.  The RMHC sells the metal tabs and all funds support their cause. You can find the pop tabs on soda cans, some soup or vegetable cans, cat food cans, etc.

Thank you for your help in supporting this worthy cause.

COAT DRIVE IS ALL WRAPPED UP!

A big thank you to all of you who donated winter wear items for our neighbors in need.  We had a tremendous reception of items, both new and gently used.  A great thanks to Mary Gaziano who helped so much by washing many items and taking some to the dry cleaners; and to Heather Hill for collecting and washing those items from the CCD community.  Our first big load was taken to St. Theresa in Ashburn for their Divine Mercy Outreach Harvest program for the needy; our next big haul will be taken to Catholic Charities this week.  As we approach Thanksgiving, we extend our thanks to all who made the lives of many people that much better by keeping them warm.  This is truly the spirit of Christ here at St. Ambrose.

Anxiety in Children

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is really just a form of stress. It can be experienced in many different ways - physically, emotionally, and in the way people view the world around them. Anxiety mainly relates to worry about what  might  happen - worrying about things going wrong or feeling like you are in some kind of danger.

Anxiety is a natural human reaction, and it serves an important biological function: It is an alarm system that is activated whenever we perceive danger or a threat. When the body and mind react, we can feel physical sensations, like dizziness, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, and sweaty or shaky hands and feet. These sensations - called the fight-flight response - are caused by a rush of adrenaline and other stress hormones that prepare the body to make a quick getaway or "flight" from danger.

The fight-flight response happens instantly. But it usually takes a few seconds longer for the thinking part of the brain (the cortex) to process the situation and evaluate whether the threat is real, and if so, how to handle it. When the cortex sends the all-clear signal, the fight-flight response is deactivated and the nervous system starts to calm down.

Shout Outs!
Big shout outs to the track and country cross coaches, who volunteer during the fall season and in the spring season with practice twice a week, and then pre-meets, 2 track meets and 2 cross country meets during the school year. Mani Tiwari has been running this great outdoors sport for 4 consecutive years, and he has always count on MaryEllen DeWolfe to help him.

Please send in your submissions! I accept submissions from teachers, staff, and parents. If you know of something interesting going on in our community, or want to give a shout out to someone at the school, I'd love to add it to the Buzz. I especially enjoy pictures. Please contact Mrs. Rowley to make sure that we have permission to publish pictures of every student in the picture. Pictures need to be less than 5MB. Submissions are due by Mondays at 5pm. There won't be a Buzz edition next week. I wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving.
