MESSAGE FROM PASTOR JON
Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove,
This coming Monday, we will welcome new friends who have been without a home into our church. We will provide shelter, comfort, food, necessities and fellowship. Winter Relief is an extraordinary event in the life of the church because we reach into the rich resources of this congregation and "entertain angels in our midst," as the writer of Hebrews puts it.
Winter Relief also gives us opportunity to connect as a church. As we come together to serve our guests, we come closer in community. We bond over meals, games, work and acts of compassion. Please sign up for a time to come by and enjoy fellowship with new and old friends. Thank you, Christine Caufield-Noll, Cheryl Schafer and Debbie Saylor for leading us in Winter Relief.
Tomorrow morning, we are calling on all willing persons to help clean and tidy the church for Winter Relief and our upcoming anniversary celebrations. We will begin at 8 am and work through the morning. Please contact our Facilities Elder, Rob Yaeger (

PRAYER
God of our life, whose presence sustains us in every circumstance,
As the sound of gunfire again echoes over another American city,
we seek the grounding power of your love and compassion.
As death rained down from above in the dark of night,
We pray this day for the Sun of Righteousness to arise with healing in its wings,
and rain mercy, grace and peace upon our broken people.
So many have been lost: brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends
gathered in the unity of music, scattered by evil and hatred.
We pray for solace for all who loved them.
We pray for those who have been spared and those whose lives are changed
forever that they may find healing, sustenance, and strength in the hard
days to come.
We give thanks for first responders:
who ran toward gunfire, rather than away
who dropped everything to save the wounded and comfort survivors
We pray for doctors and nurses and mental health providers
who repair what has been broken
who to try to bring healing and hope
in the face of the unchecked principalities and powers of violence .
We ask for sustaining courage for those who are suffering and traumatized.
We cry,
how long, O Lord?
But the same words echo back, again and again
as if the question comes to us from You--
how long, how long, how long...
In the wake of an event that should be impossible to contemplate but which has become all too common in our experience,
open our eyes, break our hearts,
and turn our hands to the movements of your Spirit,
that our anger and sorrow may unite in service to build a reign of peace,
where the lion and the lamb may dwell together,
and terror no longer holds sway over our common life.
In the name of Christ, our healer and our Light, we pray, Amen.

 IT'S CATCH-UP TIME AT ARK AND DOVE Ark and Dove had an amazing first seven months of giving this year. For the first time in history or memory, pledging was ahead on July 31. In August, the congregation hit the beaches, the campsites and the summer travel itineraries: worship attendance and pledged-giving naturally fell behind. September was also a tad slow. So it's Catch-up Time at Ark and Dove. The Finance Team has printed giving statements, and they are in the lobby. Because of you, we are having an impact in our community and in the lives of our members. We had over 60 people attending LOGOS on Tuesday night! Sign-ups for Winter Relief are strong. We are mentoring our second refugee family. Sunday Night Senior High Youth Group is full strength, and we field a great Sunday School at two services of worship. We had 236 people in worship last weekend. Thank you for your generous support of our many ministries. - from Our Finance Team and Our Stewardship Team

Tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, at 2:00 the Mosaic Duo will be giving a performance in the sanctuary. They are a harp and flute duo from the Virginia Symphony and you won't want to miss it! Tickets can be purchased at the door for $25.00.
This Sunday, the children will be singing at the 9:30 service and will be accompanied by Eric Echols on violin. I hope you will get to hear the great work they've been doing!

CHURCH CLEANUP DAY, Saturday, October 7, 8am-2pm
We need you to help with the annual maintenance of our building and grounds. We have everything from painting and cleaning inside, to trimming trees and weeding outside. Please join us tomorrow, Saturday, beginning at 8:00 am, with any amount of time you have available. Lunch will be provided. If you cannot be here on that Saturday, you can still help. letter to his nephew was a cautionary tale on what it meant to be a black man in America in 1962. More than a half century later, Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote his award-winning book

WINTER RELIEF
And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me." Winter relief is almost here! October 9-16. We need you to please sign up this Sunday to share your gifts with the 25 men who will be staying with us. We really need Morning and Evening Drivers, 1 more person to help with Laundry on Wednesday, the Evening and Sunday Hospitality teams need people to listen, play games and spend time with our guests.

REFUGEE MENTORING MINISTRY
|
IT'S A MATCH! - REFUGEE MENTORING MINISTRY Members of the refugee ministry met with the mentoring program representative from the International Rescue Committee (IRC), Salman, on Monday, October 2. In that meeting, members learned more about IRC's mentoring program and, at the end of the meeting, selected a family to work with for the next 6 months! We've chosen a young Burmese family, who live about 25 minutes from Ark and Dove, and they are very excited to meet us. For those who are interested in mentoring the family, there are two important items that must be completed:
- All persons interacting with the family must complete a background check through the IRC (even if you've just done one to work with church youth) and there is a $30 fee for this check
- There will be a meet and greet on a day that works for us and the family at the family's home (date TBD). At this time, we'll get to know the family and we can ask questions and learn more about what they'd like to get out of the mentoring experience. We were told by Salman that English language practice is a big need.
Ark and Dove has committed to mentor this family for at least 2 hours/week for 6 months. If there are enough members interested, the individual time commitments will be quite reasonable (and we could possibly mentor 2 families!). A schedule will be forthcoming. THANKFUL 100 Xs OVER
Fall is here and Thanksgiving is less than 2 months away. Just want to give everyone a heads up that we're geared up for year 5 of Thankful 100 X's Over. Each year we've been able to provide meals for over 100 families in Anne Arundel County and will do the same this year. Many people have given financial donations or have shopped without using a gift card (cost of groceries approximately $75). If you are able to shop and pay for groceries yourself that would be great. If you would like to shop but cannot pay for the groceries you will get a gift card. Just let me know what your family would like to do. Please reply back and confirm that your family will be able to help out again :) We'll need shoppers, phone callers, kids to help with pick up date (Tuesday, November 21). We are collecting a special offerings this month. The PCUSA Peace and Global Witness Special Offering promotes programs that further peacemaking in our local community, country, and globally. Twenty-five percent of this offering will stay right here in the congregation and will be used to support our Refugee Welcoming ministry. Prince of Peace is hosting its second annual
Touch a Truck event tomorrow,
Saturday Oct. 7th from 11-2. The event is free--our gift to the community. But we are encouraging participants to bring canned goods for the Crofton Christian Caring Council food pantry as "price of admission." We will have trucks of all kinds plus treats from Tropical Smoothie. It is a rain or shine event.

LECTURE at FIRST PRESBYTERIAN The Honorable Wilma Newhoudt-Druchen, Member of the South African Parliament, will lecture at the First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, Sunday, October 15, 7:00 pm. Parking in the Hillman Garage across from the Sanctuary off Duke of Gloucester. Wilma was raised within the Dutch Reformed Mission Church of South Africa and received PCUSA support to study at Gallaudet University in D.C. in the 1980s. Upon her return to South Africa she emerged as a leader with the deaf community and has held a position in the Parliament since the new constitution was approved in 1997.

8:00 am on Saturday, October 21 for a delicious breakfast, great fellowship, and a thought-provoking presentation by our own Chris Wilkins! Chris will be sharing his experiences about his time in the military, including his experiences in Vietnam. For those of us who've watched the Ken Burn's Vietnam series recently, this will be a great opportunity to hear from someone who actually was there in this pivotal time in our country's history. Please respond if you are coming, so we know how many tables to put together! This replaces the breakfast event we planned for this Saturday, October 7, which we postponed because of the planned church cleanup. There are no words to express how thankful we are for the many caring and supportive ways that our church family supported our family and helped celebrate our mom's life this past Saturday. We, along with my sister, brother and their families are so grateful for your prayers, the wonderful food at the reception, the folks who greeted, the gifts of our worship and music leaders and the kindness and support by our deacons, elders and pastors. We are grateful to the members and friends, who did so many wonderful acts of kindness and generosity to support our family.
