Dear Friends,

On September 17, 2013 we will celebrate the 225th anniversary of the ratification of the Constitution of the United States. This remarkable living document gives all American citizens the right to vote, the ability to speak openly, and the liberty to pursue personal choices free from discrimination.  Perhaps at no other time in history, as we witness rapid global changes in government and leadership, can we better appreciate the strengths of our own laws and value systems.

As our own observance of Constitution Week 2013, our first joint conference with the Foundation for Law, Justice and Society will launch September 18 starting with a keynote speech by Yale Law School Professor, Akhil Reed Amar. A 2 day workshop will follow convening scholars from universities around the world to Rye, New York. These thoughtful individuals - from Oxford and Sussex, England to Sofia, Bulgaria to Harvard and Stanford - will discuss and examine the evolving role of populism in influencing governments.

Our Constitution inspires us, "we the people," to have a voice and be active members of our communities and our nation.  In 1952, Congress designated September 17 as "Citizenship Day"

"for the complete instruction of citizens in their responsibilities and opportunities as citizens of the United States and of the State and locality in which they reside."  At JHC, this same directive to promote civic advocacy is one of our central goals; it is articulated in many of the visitor and school programs that we offer all calendar year. We are proud to have been added this year to New York  State's "Path Through History" for exploring themes of Civil Rights.  Going into its 12th year of performances, "Striving For Freedom" our signature play about the abolition of slavery in New York has been seen by thousands of school children. And coming this February 8, 2014 we will host our first African American History Symposium in partnership with the Westchester Historical Society.

We hope you will join us for these and many more exceptional offerings for children and adults coming up in 2013 -2014 from Jay Day to our Zebra Soiree fundraiser.  If you are not yet a JHC member, please consider supporting our efforts with a donation or a gift of time as a volunteer.   We look forward to seeing you at the Jay Estate!
