Johns Hopkins' FoodSpan Curriculum

In Mike Wierzbicki's environmental science and botany classes at North County High School in Glen Burnie, Maryland, his students are comparing the traits of different peppers and aspects of the heat scale thanks to Mr. Wierzbicki's participation in the FoodSpan curriculum.

FoodSpan was developed by the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future and focuses on teaching students what it takes for food to go from in the garden to your plate. The lessons include how food is grown, processed and distributed; how it is marketed and labeled based on government policy; and the impact it has on human health and the environment.

FoodSpan is a free, downloadable high school curriculum that highlights critical issues in the food system and empowers students to be food citizens.
