Vermont Creative Network Summit: Two Days in Pictures

Photos by Rachel Stearns.
The scene at the Vermont Statehouse for the past two days was distinctly non-legislative. Creative Placemaking, Latest and Greatest Arts Economic Data, and The Alchemy of Appreciative
Inquiry were all on the agenda as representatives of the creative sector gathered in Montpelier to listen, share ideas, and commit to taking the Vermont Creative Network (VCN) to the next level.

The theme of the 2017 VCN Summit, "Connect to Advance," was evident throughout plenary presentations, break-out sessions, and in conversations beneath a bust of Abraham Lincoln. Stay tuned for information on outcomes and next steps.

Vermont Theater Company Wins Regional Award

The last twelve months have been eventful for JAG Productions. The Woodstock-based theater company produced two plays, August Wilson's "Fences" and the Vermont premiere of Tarell Alvin McCraney's "Choir Boy," and presented a theater festival focused on emerging African-American playwrights. In October, JAG received the New England Theatre Conference's Regional Award for Outstanding Achievement in the American Theatre. All this from an organization formed in 2016!

In his acceptance speech, JAG Founding Producing Artistic Director Jarvis Antonio Green said "In this contemporary moment where we are constantly being made aware of the deep divisions that keep us segregated and siloed from people who don't act, think, talk, or look like us - it is crucial NOW more than ever that we build, encourage and support theaters that reflect the diversity in our nation and our world. Our stories desperately need to be told."

Congratulations to Jarvis Green and JAG Productions for this well-deserved honor -  and thanks for enriching Vermont's theater community.

Filmmaker Presents "My Father's Vietnam"

Oldcastle Theatre's Independent Film Series offers a rare opportunity to meet both the creator and the subject of a documentary film. On November 11, in honor of Veteran's Day, filmmaker Soren Sorensen will screen "My Father's Vietnam," which explores the connections made and unmade by the Vietnam War. Peter Sorensen, Vietnam veteran and father of the filmmaker, will join his son in a pre-event meet and greet and a post-screening Q&A.

Winter is Coming: Three Artists Get Creative

Winter in Vermont means icy roads, gray skies, and frozen fingers from October to March. If that were all it meant, we wouldn't want to live here. But Vermont artists, who choose to live here in higher concentration than in any other state, obviously find something redeeming. We asked a few Vermont artists for their tips on surviving - and maybe even enjoying - this frigid season. Read on in, " Ten Tips for Surviving Winter,"  this week's featured story.
The Vermont Arts Council is funded, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts , which requires a 1:1 match from the Vermont State Legislature. Council grants, programs, and statewide arts promotion would not be possible without the critical funding provided by these government agencies.
