All Aboard! Accelerator to Practice Information Session

Because of scheduling conflicts with other programs last Thursday, we will be hosting an additional, Accelerator to Practice Information Session on Friday, November 17th from 1:30-2:00pm in room 315.
 
The Accelerator to Practice Program is the Law School's award-winning three year program designed to prepare you for solo and small firm practice, providing specialized training, paid firm internships and guaranteed placement in the law firm's clinical practice. Please remember that the December 4th application is your one chance to join.  

To reserve your spot, please RSVP on Symplicity under the events tab for the November 17 1LD/2LE Accelerator to Practice Information Session.

Save the Date for "I Know What You Did Last Summer" on November 30th!
 
Wondering where to work next summer? Maybe you know where you want to work, but don't know how to land the internship.
 
For the second year, PCD presents "I Know What You Did Last Summer," an informal opportunity for 1LD/2LEs (and interested 2LD/3LEs) to mix and mingle with upper level students who have had a wide array of summer experiences, including working in criminal prosecution and defense, government, nonprofit organizations, private practice, overseas, and judicial internships. This is a great way to explore your many summer options in a relaxed setting.
 
Please join us on Thursday, November 30th from 2:00 to 3:00pm in the Function Room in Sergeant Hall to learn more about your summer job search from fellow students! This will be an information fair type of event, so drop by anytime between 2:00 and 3:00. Snacks provided! RSVP under the "Events" tab on Symplicity.

What's New?
  • Apply for a PAID Consumer Law Public Service Fellowship for Spring 2018!   The Consumer Law Public Service Fellowships support current students at Suffolk Law School working in internships in the field of consumer law. Fellowship applications for Spring 2018 will be accepted via Symplicity through Friday, December 1st at 10:00am. Students are encouraged to try to secure their internship prior to receiving the fellowship as the award is contingent on obtaining a placement with an eligible employer, but it is not necessary to have a placement beforehand to be awarded a fellowship. In the past, fellows have found placements with agencies such as the Boston Fair Housing Commission, Greater Boston Legal Service's Consumer Rights Unit, the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation and the National Consumer Law Center.   • Attention 1L Students:  Financial Literacy & Scholarships!  Suffolk Student Financial Services (SFS) has launched the MAX program, a free, multi-faceted, personal finance curriculum designed in conjunction with law students and exclusively for law students by AccessLex Institute MAX is available for new 1Ls this year.  MAX provides a comprehensive personal finance program featuring a building block curriculum which will be there for each step of the law school journey and takes a multi-format approach - including an interactive online curriculum, in-person workshops, one-on-one counseling and more -  and delivers information in quick and easy to understand components to fit into demanding schedules.  In addition, MAX Offers scholarship incentives to participants to motivate them to stay on task and on track.   SFS invites all 1L students to make sure they will be graduating with maximized financial capability.   Sign up online !

  • Massachusetts Law School Consortium Government & Public Interest Program: Each year public interest and government employers come to Boston to interview students for summer and post-graduate positions. This year's MLSC spring semester program will be held at Boston University School of Law on January 22 and 23, 2018. A list of participating employers was emailed to all students last week and is available in the Document Library on the Suffolk Symplicity site. There are a few new interviewing and collection only employers! New this week: U.S. Attorney's Office Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney's Office Civil Division, Community Legal Aid, and U.S. Dept. of Justice Environmental Enforcement. Applications for the interviewing and collection only employers are due on the MLSC Symplicity site by noon on Monday, December 4.  Don't miss this interview opportunity!

  • Loan Repayment Information Session - Wednesday, November 15, 11:00am to 12:00pm, room 315. To all law students with loans: Whether you are graduating this year or next, join us to learn about loan repayment options. Spend only one hour to help yourself - as well as your future clients - understand student loans and strategies for repayment. AccessLex, expert in all aspects of student loans, will present on:  Understanding your student loan debt; Payment plans; and Loan forgiveness. Bring your laptop and your FAFSA ID and password - we'll help you find critical information on the web! 
     
  • FYSIP-Judicial Information Session - Thursday, November 16, 3:00 to 4:00pm, room 295. Over 80 1LD/2LEs were placed in state and federal judicial internships this past summer through FYSIP-Judicial (First Year Summer Internship Program). All 1LDs should attend this information session to learn more about the work of a judicial intern and the application process.  RSVP under the 'Events' tab on Symplicity.  
     
  • Liberty Mutual Design Project Event - Friday, November 17, 9:00am  to 6:00pm, 5th Floor Commons, Sargent Hall. This is an all-day design competition even. 6-8 teams of 3-5 students per team will have the opportunity to hear a real world scenario and then within certain parameters, have to innovate something to help solve the issue presented. At the conclusion of the event, there will be a networking reception where judges, officials from Liberty Mutual, and professionals will mingle with student competitors.   • 1L Cover Letter Day - Friday, November 17, 10:00am to 3:00pm, PCD Library. Bring a draft of your cover letter to the PCD suite for review. Start preparing your internship applications! Drop-in anytime between 10:00am and 3:00pm. No RSVP on Symplicity is necessary.
     
  • Accelerator to Practice Information Session - Friday, November 17, 1:30 to 2:00pm, room 315. Suffolk's Accelerator to Practice Program is the nation's first of its kind, comprehensive three-year program designed to prepare law school graduates for solo and small firm practice. The program has a specialized track of instruction that includes an expanded professional development and skills curriculum, technological training, supervised internships, associate-level work in the Accelerator Practice (clinic), and career development supports.   • CLE: Funding Your Charitable Programs: Structuring Partnerships and Joint Ventures to Optimize Charitable Purposes and Social Impact - Wednesday, November 29, 2:00 to 5:00pm, BBA. Non-profit organizations are increasingly turning to partnerships and joint-ventures for both fundraising and implementation of their charitable missions. This CLE will provide an overview of different types of partnerships and joint-ventures and potential issues and solutions in forming and operating these partnerships and joint ventures.   • CLE: Handling a High Conflict Custody Case - Wednesday, December 6, 4:00 to 7:00pm, BBA. High conflict custody cases are among the most difficult for lawyers and the court system to handle.  This CLE program is designed to provide attendees with practical tips from experienced attorneys, a forensic psychologist and a judge on how to better deal with high conflict custody cases. Attendees will learn how to prepare your client for GAL investigations/evaluations, working with parenting coordinators, and utilizing experienced experts in an effort to bring calm and balance to a high conflict case. Attendees will learn invaluable techniques achieving settlement and if settlement cannot be achieved, for presenting the best case at trial as possible.  Hear tips from the bench on what to do and what not to do when representing a client in a high conflict custody case. RSVP (SULS PDR credit)
     
  • Justinian Law Society's Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner/Christmas Gathering - Wednesday, December 13, 6:00 to 9:00pm, 200 Seaport Boulevard, Boston. Special Guest and Keynote Speaker Massachusetts Supreme Court Justice Frank M. Gaziano will join us for this memorable evening. Justice Gaziano is a graduate of Suffolk Univesity of Law School who has served as an adjunct faculty member at Suffolk Law and has been an active supporter of Suffolk law students through the school's internship program. As an Italian-American attorney, former prosecutor, Superior Court and recent Supreme Court Justice of Massachusetts, we are honored to have Justice Gaziano serve as our keynote speaker at this annual event.   • The Boston Lawyers Group: The mission of the Boston Lawyers Group (BLG) is to support the efforts of its member organizations to identify, recruit, advance and retain attorneys of color. They offer several programs throughout the year for law students of color which provide interview, mentoring, and networking opportunities, as well as career exploration and mock interviews.
